Kayah State 5/10: Loikaw Breakfast Kayah Myanmar

Early morning in Loikaw, the capital city of Kayah State, Myanmar. I, mr.hotsia, woke up excited to experience authentic Kayah-style breakfast unlike any other in the region. This trip to Loikaw was full of vibrant stories reflecting the true lifestyle of the Kayah people.

Loikaw is a small town nestled in a valley, featuring beautiful landscapes and cool morning air. The morning market here is bustling with diverse ethnic groups including Kayah, Kachin, and Red Tai. The market atmosphere is filled with lively conversations and the aroma of fresh food prepared for breakfast. I wandered through narrow alleys in the market to find local signature dishes.

For breakfast in Loikaw, many might not be familiar with the name “Loikaw,” but for me, it was an unmissable experience. Here, I tasted breakfast made from fresh local ingredients such as hot sticky rice served with spicy Kayah chili paste, fresh vegetables from the farms, and simply cooked meats with surprisingly rich flavors. Another favorite dish was “Kayah rice porridge” with wild mushrooms and local herbs. The fragrant Burmese spices and herbs made this breakfast worth waking up early for.

Besides food, drinking quality tea here is a symbol of a new morning in Loikaw. I clearly remember the strong green tea brewed from local tea leaves, which was different from other parts of Myanmar. The aroma of tea leaves mixed with a slight sweetness from added milk made me sip tea while watching people pass by in the market with contentment.

When it comes to breakfast in Kayah State, many might think only of the native foods of nearby Kachin State.Kachin StateKnown for its nature and traditional foods of the Shan and Red Tai people, but Loikaw has its own charm and uniqueness. Traveling here reminded me of the cultural diversity that connects this region in an interesting way.

Many times when I traveled to various cities in Myanmar, such as Bagan (Pagan), which I have written about in articles,Food in Bagan, Pagan, Myanmaror the experience of riding a horse carriage in Bagan,Horse carriage ride in Bagan, Paganbut this time in Loikaw, I learned that eating is not just about ingredients and flavors but also a connection to the life and culture of the local people.

Walking through the morning market in Loikaw reminded me of the Irrawaddy riverside market in Pathein,Irrawaddy Riverside Market, Pathein, Myanmarwhich is full of seafood and local products, but here in Loikaw, the focus is more on mountain and forest ingredients. Even though it is the same region, the differences in breakfast across provinces make me want to travel and discover more local foods.

Besides tasting breakfast in Loikaw, I also talked with locals at the market. They said that Kayah breakfast is not just about taste but a ritual showing respect for nature and ancestors. Many dishes I ate contained herbs and ingredients gathered from the forest by the villagers themselves. This moment was not just about eating but about understanding the lifestyle and deep connection of the Kayah people with nature.

For those interested in experiencing Loikaw breakfast like this, I, mr.hotsia, recommend coming to the morning market from 5 to 7 AM to see real life and feel the atmosphere of this small town hidden in the valley of Kayah State.

If you have more time, visiting Indawgyi Lake in Kachin StateIndawgyiis another interesting destination because it is full of nature and the lifestyle of the Red Tai and Kachin people, who still live simply and close to nature.

Finally, I would like to share a videoKayah State 5/10: Loikaw Breakfast Kayah Myanmarthat I recorded for you to see the real atmosphere and better understand the feeling of this journey.

I, mr.hotsia, continue to travel and seek new experiences in Myanmar and throughout Southeast Asia. See you again in the next article.
