Backpacking India 6/129: Joyfully Taking Friend's Mother to Explore Saddar Cave, Hpa An Myanmar Home Stay
I, mr.hotsia, just returned from a trip to Hpa An, a small town in Myanmar that many may not be very familiar with yet. But I can say that this place has a charm that anyone who visits will be deeply impressed by, especially taking my friend's mother on this trip to Hpa An. It gave me a new perspective on traveling that is warm and full of joy from the very first step off the vehicle.
"Saddar Cave" was the first destination my friend's mother and I stopped to visit. The uniqueness of this cave is not only in the beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites but also in the profound feeling of being close to nature and the simple lifestyle of the Myanmar people who remain deeply connected to this place. The walk up to the cave entrance might be a bit tiring for my friend's mother, but her bright eyes and the smile she wore on the way back made every step truly worthwhile.
Hpa An is located in southern Myanmar. It is a town surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains and the Salween River, a major river that flows through Myanmar for a long distance. The tranquility here made me feel like I had escaped the hustle and bustle of any big city I have ever been to.
Hpa An Myanmar Home Stay: Accommodation as Warm as Home
This time I chose to stay at a homestay in Hpa An where the host welcomed us like family. I prefer this atmosphere over staying in large hotels because it allows me to experience the real lifestyle of the locals, taste freshly made local food, and exchange culture in a friendly way. This place was not just accommodation but became a wonderful memory of this trip.
The food at the homestay impressed me just as much. Most of the dishes served were traditional Myanmar cuisine with rich and balanced flavors, blending spices perfectly, such as chicken curry with young coconut and jasmine rice cooked over low heat. Every dinner felt warm and joyful, like eating with family at home.
Lifestyle and Local Market in Hpa An
Walking around the local market in Hpa An is another activity I highly recommend. This market is full of the colors of Myanmar culture and lifestyle. There are fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and freshly prepared food to taste, as well as handmade local crafts that make great souvenirs.
Although it is a small market, the atmosphere is much warmer than in big cities. I saw my friend's mother smiling and chatting with the vendors in a friendly manner, as if truly experiencing the genuine kindness of the Myanmar people.
Connecting with Kachin State Context and Nearby Attractions
Although Hpa An is located in southern Myanmar, I want to connect this experience with the context ofKachin Statewhich is in northern Myanmar and that I have previously shared about. Kachin State is considered the origin of the main Irrawaddy River, which is also an important river in Myanmar. Traveling through different areas of Myanmar allows us to understand the natural and cultural diversity of this country more deeply.
Additionally, I would like to recommend checking outIndawgyi Lakelocated in Kachin State, which is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. For those interested in nature and diverse birdwatching, it is another side of Myanmar you should not miss.
Travel Experience with Friend's Mother: Simple Happiness
This trip with my friend's mother made me realize that traveling does not always have to be far or luxurious. True happiness comes from spending time together, learning, and opening our hearts to new things together. Whether it was the tiring walk up Saddar Cave for my friend's mother or sitting to rest while watching the Salween River view in the evening, everything became precious memories.
I, mr.hotsia, recommend everyone to open their hearts and experience Myanmar from a less talked about angle like Hpa An. And don’t forget to bring your loved ones along because the most meaningful journeys are those shared with happiness and experiences together.
