Indawgyi Myanmar 6/46: Mingalaba Indawgyi Part 1/2 Nong Nene takes you to INDAWGYI in love

Hello, I am mr.hotsia from the real field in Myanmar. Today I will take friends to get to know and experience the beauty of Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, which is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. My feeling when visiting here was like entering another world, a peaceful world full of pure nature that is still not much disturbed by development.

Indawgyi Lake is located in the Mohnyin administrative area of Kachin State, not far from the state’s main city, making travel here not too difficult for travelers who enjoy exploring new routes. Around the lake, there are more than 20 villages that still maintain the traditional lifestyles of the Shan, Tai Red, and Kachin people. The lifestyle here combines agriculture and fishing in the vast lake.

When I took a boat from the guesthouse to explore the lake, the calm water and sky reflecting on the surface made me feel fully recharged by nature. I took a boat to see wildlife and various bird species living in this area, especially in January when rare birds like Greylag geese, Lesser Whistling Ducks, and purple swamphens can be seen up close. This is a destination bird watchers should not miss if they want to experience the richness of Myanmar’s nature.

For traveling to Indawgyi, I recommend preparing for exploration by renting a motorcycle for convenience and more freedom. You can rent one from hotels in Mohnyin city for about 350 baht per day. Riding a motorcycle in Kachin State requires wearing a helmet at all times for safety and to comply with local laws. Riding around villages and the lake shore lets you encounter the simple and incredibly friendly lifestyle of the locals.

Around Indawgyi Lake, there are many interesting communities, such as Shan villages that still use their local language and firmly preserve their customs. Most villagers still practice traditional agriculture, and there are small markets held on some days. These markets are sources of local food and rare handmade products. There are also restaurants serving authentic Myanmar dishes and local Tai Red cuisine. I tried the food and must say the freshness of ingredients and the unpretentious flavors let you truly taste the local cuisine.

Many might wonder how far Indawgyi is from major tourist spots like Bagan or Yangon. Actually, if you are interested in nature and want to escape the bustle of big cities, coming to Indawgyi is very worthwhile. This place is different from tourist cities like Bagan that I have described in my articles.Food in Bagan, MyanmarOr horse carriage rides around Yangon cityHorse carriage rides in Bagan, MyanmarAlthough fun, those places are lively and more touristy with horse carriages. Indawgyi is suitable for those who truly love peace and nature.

Regarding travel in Kachin State, I recommend friends to read more aboutKachin Statewhich I have written about the origin of the Irrawaddy River and interesting travel routes in this area. It helps us understand the context of this region better and prepare well for the next adventure.

In summary, visiting Indawgyi Lake is not just an ordinary trip but an experience to truly connect with the authentic lifestyle of Myanmar people, immerse in abundant nature, and fill the traveler's heart with peace, as I, mr.hotsia, truly feel. For those who love deep trips focusing on people and pure nature, I recommend keeping Indawgyi on your travel list.
