Myitkyina 6: Myitkyina Evening Market, Myitkyina city, Kachin State, Myanmar
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to Myitkyina, a small town located in Kachin State in northern Myanmar. It has a charm different from typical big cities. The highlight I don’t want friends to miss is the Myitkyina evening market, a market full of life, local lifestyle, and an incredible variety of local foods.
Myitkyina itself is an important town because it is where the Mali and Maykha rivers converge to form the headwaters of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s main river, which is over 2,170 kilometers long. I have previously written about the origin of the Irrawaddy River and my trip to Myitsone, which is not far from Myitkyina, in an article.Kachin StateThis context makes Myitkyina even more interesting when you realize you are traveling in the land at the headwaters of this important river.
Atmosphere of Myitkyina evening market
The Myitkyina evening market opens from late afternoon until evening. It is a market where local townspeople and nearby villagers gather to buy and sell fresh produce, dried goods, and a wide variety of snacks. Upon entering, I felt the bustling energy, with calls from vendors blending with the aroma of freshly grilled and fried foods, truly bringing the atmosphere to life.
I walked past stalls selling fresh vegetables from farms. The Kachin people and other local tribes brought local produce to sell. Some items I had never seen before, such as various native vegetables that were very tempting to try, as well as fresh seasonal fruits and spices with unique northern Myanmar aromas that blend perfectly with the local cuisine.
Local foods you must try
What impressed me most was the local food sold at this evening market. There were hot Burmese noodles seasoned with local spices, as well as freshly made snacks like Burmese fermented pork and grilled chicken marinated with spices until flavorful. There was also hot sticky rice served with spicy Kachin chili paste that I really enjoyed.
For those who have traveledBagan, PaganYou might be familiar with the variety of Burmese food, but in Myitkyina, I felt the food here has a more distinctive character because it is enriched with natural ingredients and authentic local recipes. Additionally, I tried freshly grilled fish from the Irrawaddy River caught locally. The sweet, rich flavor and mild smoky aroma made me want to come back many times.
Travel and lifestyle in Myitkyina
For traveling in Myitkyina, I chose to rent a motorcycle from my accommodation, which was not very expensive, about 350 baht per day. I experienced the beautiful and peaceful roadside scenery. Traffic was not heavy. Driving in town requires wearing a helmet at all times, which I followed for safety.
Myitkyina is a small town that still preserves the simplicity of rural life well. Both Kachin people and other ethnic groups live together harmoniously. Walking around town and visiting the evening market allowed me to see the real lifestyle of the people here, including conversations, bargaining, and exchanging simple but charming daily life stories.
Connecting with the tourism context around Kachin State
If you continue traveling to Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, I recommend reading my article atIndawgyiwhich is not far from Myitkyina. There you will find nature that remains pristine and peaceful, with villages of the Red Tai and Kachin people where you can learn about a different way of life from the city.
Experiencing the slow life by shopping at the Myitkyina evening market is an experience I think adventurous travelers who seek genuine connections with people should not miss. Because this place is not just a market but a true center of Kachin people's lifestyle and culture.
Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
The Myitkyina evening market is not like typical tourist markets that are organized or staged to attract tourists. It is a market full of the real lives of people in Kachin State. I walked past various shops, talked with vendors, tasted freshly made food, and saw the culture and smiles of the locals up close.
If anyone wants to experience a unique perspective of tourism in Myanmar, the Myitkyina evening market is a choice I strongly recommend. And don’t forget, when you come here, try to find a day to exploreKachin Statemore broadly to better understand the diversity of this land.
