Backpack India 8/129: Full stomach for 99 Baht Burmese food in Hpa An

When talking about Hpa An city in Myanmar, many might think of the peaceful nature and beautiful limestone mountain scenery. But for me, mr.hotsia, Hpa An has another charm not to be missed, which is “Burmese food” with authentic flavors at affordable prices, so filling that you can get full for less than a hundred baht!

I had the chance to experience the street atmosphere in downtown Hpa An and came across a friendly-priced Burmese restaurant called “8/129.” It’s a small place that looks unassuming, but the taste won me over from the first bite. For just 99 Thai Baht, I enjoyed traditional Burmese style food with rich chicken curry, fresh side dishes, and hot steamed rice served charmingly on a small plate but packed with flavor.

The atmosphere at 8/129 felt like stepping back into old Myanmar, still simple and warm. The owner, a cheerful Burmese person, chatted casually with customers. I sat eating while observing local life, seeing Burmese people passing by, including school children and villagers who came continuously to eat.

Burmese food and its variety of flavors

The food I ate in Hpa An reflects the diverse Burmese culinary culture, with balanced sour, salty, sweet, and spicy flavors just like I’ve encountered inFood in Bagan, MyanmarBut here, the focus is more on local ingredients and freshness, especially herbs and native vegetables added to dishes, giving each menu a distinct character.

The dish I highly recommend is the “chicken curry,” rich with traditional Burmese spices. Paired with hot steamed rice, it’s so delicious I had to have a second helping. There’s also a clear soup that’s refreshing, and other local foods like crispy fried mochi and Burmese chili paste, flavorful but not overly spicy—perfect for travelers wanting to try something new but not too intense.

Lifestyle and atmosphere in Hpa An

While eating at 8/129, I witnessed the simple life of Burmese people here. My trip in Hpa An wasn’t flashy like big city tourism but was full of warmth and a sense of “home” rarely found in typical tourist spots.

If you like this kind of atmosphere, I recommend strolling through the small markets around Hpa An town. There you’ll find fresh local products—vegetables, fruits, and many tempting street foods—as well as friendly locals eager to share their life stories humbly.

For travelers wanting to venture off the main path, Hpa An is also a gateway to authentic traditional Burmese nature and culture, just as I have shared in stories aboutKachin StateandIndawgyiwhich are areas full of beautiful nature and fascinating cultural diversity to explore.

Thoughts from mr.hotsia after a full meal in Hpa An

Trying Burmese food at this small restaurant in Hpa An made me realize that food doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy. Deliciousness and happiness from eating often come from care and attention to ingredients, plus the surrounding atmosphere that lets us experience the real local way of life.

If you are a serious foodie traveler and not afraid to try new things, I, mr.hotsia, invite you to taste Burmese food in Hpa An. I guarantee you’ll have a worthwhile and memorable experience just like any other journey.
