Indawgyi Myanmar 8/46: Discovering the Original Red Tai People Living a Self-Sufficient Life - Exploration Trip to the East Indawgyi Side

When talking about the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, one of the names must beIndawgyi LakeorIndawgyi Lakeis definitely on the top list. This lake is located inKachin StateMyanmar, covering an area of over 780 square kilometers and is a nationally important wildlife sanctuary. The environment around the lake is rich in natural abundance, and importantly, the indigenous communities of the Red Tai and Kachin people still maintain a truly self-sufficient lifestyle along the lake's shores.

This time, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to the eastern side of Indawgyi to experience the real life of the original Red Tai people who still live simply, following the principle of “self-sufficiency” as I had heard for a long time. I want to share from the perspective of a traveler who truly felt the atmosphere and genuine emotions at this place.

Journey to the East Indawgyi Side

Reaching the eastern side of Indawgyi Lake is not easy. It requires patience and physical readiness because the route is not as convenient as typical tourist destinations. I chose to rent a motorcycle from the town of Myitkyina inKachin Statewhich is not far from Indawgyi. Riding a motorcycle on mostly dirt roads with dust all along the way, I had to wear a helmet tightly and prepare a face mask to protect well against the dust.

Along the way, I stopped at small villages by the roadside and saw the simple lifestyle of the locals practicing self-sufficient agriculture, growing rice, raising animals, and gathering seasonal vegetables and fruits. I saw children running in the fields and villagers smiling and greeting with genuine friendliness.

Meeting the Original Red Tai People Living a Self-Sufficient Life

Upon arriving at a small village on the eastern shore of Indawgyi, I had the chance to talk with the original Red Tai people who still live simply according to the principle of self-sufficiency. They still wear colorful traditional clothing and have their own unique language and culture that is fascinating. Most villagers farm corn, local vegetables, and raise fish in small ponds for family consumption.

The Red Tai people here have a deep connection with nature. Every daily activity aligns with the seasons and environment. They told me about the importance of maintaining natural balance to preserve abundance for future generations.

Although far from modern development, this place has charm in its peace and harmonious coexistence with nature. The feeling I received was a true sense of “home,” not just a tourist spot decorated to attract visitors.

Red Tai Cuisine - Flavors I, mr.hotsia, Must Share

On this trip, I did not miss tasting the local food of the Red Tai people, which focuses on fresh ingredients from the surrounding nature such as freshwater fish from Indawgyi Lake, local vegetables, and home-grown herbs. The cooking emphasizes simplicity but with bold and balanced flavors, such as freshwater fish curry with aromatic herbs and freshly steamed sticky rice every day.

There are also local snacks made by the Red Tai people, like Khao Tom Mat (sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves) and fermented rice flour cakes, blending natural sweet and creamy flavors. I recommend trying them while still hot; you will surely fall in love with this traditional taste.

Nature and Scenic Viewpoints Around Indawgyi Lake

During free time, I, mr.hotsia, rented a small boat from a guesthouse in the village to explore the beauty of Indawgyi Lake from a high perspective. The boat route passes through various lakeside villages and offers views of rare water birds and different mammals living in this area.

Especially in January, you can see the Lesser Whistling Duck and Greylag Goose, as well as the purple Swamphen, flying close for a remarkable and rare sight.

Connecting with the Wider Context of Kachin State and Travel in Myanmar

For those interested in traveling northern Myanmar like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend planning a trip connected withKachin Statewhich is the source of the mighty Irrawaddy River, the main lifeline of Myanmar. Besides visiting Indawgyi Lake, stopping by natural sites and small villages around will help you better understand the overall lifestyle of northern Myanmar people.

Additionally, for those who love food and culture, I have written aboutFood in Bagan, Myanmarand traveling byhorse carriage in Baganwhich has its unique charm. If you have the chance, I encourage you to experience those atmospheres together.

Summary of Impressions by mr.hotsia

Indawgyi is not just an ordinary lake but a place full of life and culture deeply meaningful to the Red Tai and indigenous communities in Kachin State. I, mr.hotsia, witnessed the beautiful simplicity of a self-sufficient lifestyle amid nature that remains abundant. This is an experience I can only say is worth traveling to experience firsthand.

If you want a trip that is not just about nature sightseeing but also learning the true way of life of the locals, the east side of Indawgyi is the answer that I, mr.hotsia, wholeheartedly recommend.
