Backpacking India 9/129: Satisfying Chinese Food in Hpa An, Kayin State, Myanmar
When talking about Hpa An, a small town nestled in Kayin State of Myanmar, many might think of lush nature or ancient temples surrounding the area. But for me, mr.hotsia, what impresses me as much as the scenery is the “Chinese food” in Hpa An. It made me stop my journey and spend much more time than planned because the taste and variety of Chinese food in this small town are so satisfying and unforgettable.
Hpa An is located by the Thanlwin River, an important river flowing through Kayin State. Towering limestone mountains surround the town, creating a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere. The local cuisine here is rooted in multiple cultures, including Burmese, Chinese, and the indigenous Kayin ethnic group. But the highlight I discovered while wandering through markets and alleys was the small family-run Chinese restaurants with flavors so good that I returned for multiple meals.
Exploring Hpa An Market with the Aroma of Chinese Food
I started by wandering through Hpa An’s fresh market in the morning. The scent of Chinese spices and herbs mixed with smoke from hot pots immediately hit my nose. The market isn’t as large as those in bigger Burmese cities but is full of lively energy and local friendliness. I saw an elderly Chinese vendor preparing fresh noodles and homemade beef meatballs, so I quickly ordered signature dishes like “Char Siu Noodles” and “Fried Dumplings” that were crispy outside and tender inside. The rich flavors and fresh ingredients made me savor every bite without rushing.
While eating, I talked with the restaurant owner, a third-generation Chinese who migrated and settled in Hpa An. He explained that the Chinese food here has adapted to local ingredients and Kayin preferences but still retains the core flavors from Yunnan Province, not far from the Myanmar-China border. This gives a taste that is both unique and familiar at the same time.
Atmosphere of Chinese Restaurants in Hpa An
Most Chinese restaurants in Hpa An are small family businesses. Some have only a few tables, decorated simply but warmly. I enjoyed sitting at the front to watch the daily life of locals passing by. Sometimes children run and laugh loudly, making me feel like I was truly experiencing real life, not just sightseeing.
Besides my favorites, char siu noodles and fried dumplings, I also liked the “Hpa An Roasted Duck Rice.” The duck meat is tender with crispy skin, topped with a special sauce made from Chinese spices and local herbs. Paired with hot steamed rice, it was irresistible to order one or two more plates.
Connecting with the Context of Kayin State and Myanmar
Hpa An is the capital of Kayin State, known for its distinctive culture and natural beauty, similar to what I wrote about in articles onKachin Stateor Indawgyi Lake inKachin StateAlthough Hpa An is not particularly famous for natural tourist attractions, tasting the food here made me clearly see the cultural connection between Chinese and indigenous ethnic groups in Kayin State.
Moreover, traveling to Hpa An is not very difficult. You can rent a motorcycle or use local transport to explore the town and surrounding areas comfortably. I recommend visiting the morning market here to experience local life and taste local dishes, including the Hpa An-style Chinese food I introduced.
The True Image of Hpa An through mr.hotsia’s Eyes
What impressed me more than the food’s taste was the sincerity of the people here. Every Chinese restaurant I visited had owners and cooks who prepared food with heart, sharing life stories like family. This warmth made me want to return again.
If anyone wants to try Chinese food different from what you find in Bangkok or major tourist spots in Myanmar, I recommend coming to Hpa An, Kayin State. You will surely enjoy satisfying meals and experience Chinese culture from a fresh perspective that’s hard to find in Myanmar’s main tourist cities.
