Indawgyi Myanmar 9/46: Mingalaba Indawgyi Part 2/2 Continuing into the Kitchen to Taste the Charm of Nong Nene Ae's Cooking
Hello, I am mr.hotsia, back to share stories of my journey at Inndawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar. This time, I will take you to experience the charm of Indawgyi's kitchen through Nong Nene Ae's cooking, which captivates with flavors and fresh local ingredients from one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia.
Indawgyi Lake is located in Mohnyin District, Kachin State. It is an important freshwater source, over 24 kilometers long and about 13 kilometers wide. Around the lake, more than 20 villages of Red Tai and Kachin ethnic groups reside. Their way of life is deeply connected to nature and the lake, making this place not only a tourist destination but also a valuable learning site for lifestyle and culture.
After exploring the nature and lakeside houses of Indawgyi, I had the opportunity to enter the kitchen of Nong Nene Ae, a local skilled in authentic traditional cooking. Seeing how she selects fresh ingredients from the lake, such as freshly caught freshwater fish and sustainably grown local vegetables, impressed me with the meticulous care in food preparation here.
Nong Nene Ae told me that food here is not just about satisfying hunger but a way to express love, respect for nature, and preserve a long-standing cultural heritage. In her kitchen, I tasted fish curry made with local spices and fresh herbs, with a balanced flavor and the aroma of galangal, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves that perfectly enhance the Indawgyi fish. There was also hot steamed sticky rice that complemented the rich curry excellently.
Tasting food here reminded me of the times I traveled toKachin Stateto see the source of the Irrawaddy River, where nature and community life coexist harmoniously, just like here at Indawgyi, where this major river and one of Myanmar’s largest freshwater lakes nourish people's lives endlessly.
For travelers wanting to visit Indawgyi, I recommend taking a local rowboat to admire the natural beauty around the lake early in the morning. This area is home to many rare bird species such as Greylag geese and the Oriental darter, which are clearly visible in January. Boat trips also offer close encounters with traditional fishing lifestyles.
After enjoying nature and local food to my heart’s content, I strolled through small villages around the lake, experiencing the warm hospitality of locals who welcome tourists with smiles and laughter. This is the unforgettable charm of Indawgyi that impressed me deeply.
