Amazing Bagan Food by mr.hotsia

When talking about the city of Bagan in Myanmar, well known as the city of a thousand pagodas, mr.hotsia says another charm not to be overlooked is the “unusual food” that’s hard to find elsewhere. This city is full of flavors and local food culture blended perfectly, yet it has its own unique specialties that I have personally tasted.

For me, traveling to Bagan is not just about seeing pagodas or riding horse carriages around the city as I have shared before inHorse Carriage Ride in Baganbut also walking through the morning market in Nyaung-U, the heart of Bagan, which is another activity I really enjoyed. The aroma of Indian roti tea fills the air, and the calls of vendors selling local Burmese food are lively and inviting.

Morning Market of Life and Unusual Food

The morning market here isn’t as large as those in the capital, but it’s full of life and many interesting foods. I tried Indian roti at a small roadside stall; it was freshly made, crispy outside and soft inside, served with strong hot tea. It was a breakfast that really energized me. There are also many types of Burmese food worth trying, such as a special chicken curry found at the morning market and local eateries in the backpacker alley where I stayed.

My favorite place is a small restaurant called “Shwe Yar Su” that serves local food and Myanmar Beer Station beer. I often eat here because the taste is delicious and the price is reasonable. The chicken curry here is simmered until the spices deeply penetrate the meat. Eating it with hot steamed rice is truly excellent. The atmosphere is friendly, perfect for those wanting to try authentic local dishes.

Unexpected Unusual Food in Bagan

One of the interesting things I found in Bagan is the “unusual food” that not only has unique flavors but some dishes require courage to try. For example, street Burmese snacks sold hot. I wasn’t sure what it was but tried it anyway. It turned out to be sweet, creamy, crispy outside and soft inside—a snack that reminded me of the simple charm of local food.

There are also local fish caught by villagers from the Irrawaddy River, which flows importantly through Myanmar. The fish here is fresh and cooked in many ways: boiled, curried, fried. I tried a type similar to the Hilsa fish famous in Bangladesh and India, which mr.hotsia has seen in the Deep Dive Bangladesh video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb7Dqijao-A). The freshness and sweetness of the fish meat made me feel that the local food here clearly reflects the riverside villagers’ way of life.

Connecting with Local Context and Nearby Attractions

If you are interested in a deeper experience of local life and food, mr.hotsia recommends exploring nearby areas such as Kachin State in northern Myanmar, the origin of the Irrawaddy River. This area has a very different and fascinating food culture. Read more atTravel to the Origin of the Irrawaddy River, Mitgina, Kachin State, Myanmar

Or if you enjoy nature alongside local food, Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State is another interesting destination. Here live the Red Tai and Shan communities with distinctive food culture and lifestyles, which I have documented inIndawgyi Lake, Kachin StateThis opens a unique world of Burmese food like no other.

Travel Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia

For those preparing to visit Bagan, don’t forget to spend time exploring the morning market and trying unusual foods here fully, as it’s an experience you won’t find elsewhere. Also, bring a face mask because Nyaung-U has many dusty roads. Getting around the city is convenient by renting horse carriages or taxis. I personally enjoy walking through the market and just riding a horse carriage around the city for fun.

Finally, I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to open their hearts to try local food in Bagan because it’s not just about eating but learning about culture, lifestyle, and the stories of the people here through the flavors on your plate. Every bite tells the story of Bagan in a way you can’t get from books or photos.
