Amazing Myanmar Fishing Style by a Burmese Woman: An astonishing fishing method in Myanmar
When talking about riverside life in Myanmar, many might imagine villagers simply rowing boats to fish. But for me, mr.hotsia, from firsthand experience, I witnessed a unique and thrilling fishing technique, especially in northern Myanmar, in Kachin State, the source of the Irrawaddy River, the country's most important river.
My journey began in Myitkyina city, not far from the confluence where the Mekha and Mali rivers join to form the mighty Irrawaddy River (read more aboutKachin State). Renting a motorcycle and riding along the dirt roads beside the river allowed me to closely experience local life and see Burmese women fishing in an extraordinary way.
Unique Fishing Method of Burmese Women
What I saw was a Burmese woman standing on a bamboo raft floating on the river. She demonstrated exceptional balance standing in the middle of the fast-flowing river and skillfully used her hands to hook fish swimming by. The unusual aspect of this method is that no fishing rods or standard equipment are used; it is a traditional fish-catching technique requiring great patience and precision.
This fishing method is not only a livelihood but also a way of life reflecting a deep connection with nature and the Irrawaddy River, which stretches 2,170 kilometers through diverse landscapes from Kachin State to Yangon and out to the Andaman Sea.
Connecting Experiences with Life by Indawgyi Lake
After witnessing this amazing fishing, I traveled to Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State. This is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia and home to the Shan and Kachin ethnic groups, who live simple yet profound lives.
Indawgyi Lake is not only naturally beautiful but also an important wildlife conservation area in Myanmar, especially for many rare waterbird species. Seeing the local villagers still using traditional fishing methods and paddling wooden boats along the water left a lasting impression on me, mr.hotsia (read the story ofIndawgyi Lake)
Reflections from the Journey and Riverside Life
Seeing Burmese women fish using this simple yet unusual method made me think about the profound simplicity of riverside life in Myanmar, where fishing techniques have been passed down through generations, differing greatly from modern fishing in many countries.
For travelers wanting to experience this way of life, I recommend planning a trip to northern Myanmar, such as Kachin State or Indawgyi Lake, where you can witness the genuine lifestyle of villagers deeply connected to the water and nature.
