Boat trip to explore riverside life along the Kaladan River to Mrauk U, Rakhine State, Myanmar

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Rakhine State, Myanmar to experience a boat trip along the Kaladan River, an important waterway connecting the port city of Sitwe to the historic town of Mrauk U, a city full of charm and stories of the ancient Rakhine Kingdom.

I started my journey from Sitwe, a port city on the banks of the Kaladan River. The atmosphere here is peaceful and simple. People still live in traditional ways blended with active water trade. Boating on the Kaladan River is an essential lifestyle for locals, used for transporting goods and traveling between communities.

Boats and waterways full of stories

The boat I traveled on was a traditional wooden boat with an engine mounted at the rear to help speed up the journey. The Kaladan River is wide with some fast-flowing sections. Along the way, I saw riverside villagers still engaged in simple fishing and farming. Some houses are built on stilts to cope with the changing water levels.

The approximately 4-hour boat trip from Sitwe to Mrauk U is not just a journey but also an exploration of the culture and lifestyle of the people in Rakhine State, which differs from other regions of Myanmar. I saw children playing in the water and locals paddling small boats to catch various fish, especially the Hilsa fish, an economically important species in this region. It was fascinating to see this fish swimming along the Kaladan River, deeply connected to the community's way of life.

Mrauk U: The historic city of forgotten beauty

As the boat approached Mrauk U, I felt the difference of this city compared to others in Myanmar. Mrauk U is filled with ancient temples and pagodas built from stone and reddish-orange bricks. Thousands of pagodas stand majestically amid grasslands and small hills, creating an atmosphere that feels like stepping back into the prosperous era of the ancient Rakhine Kingdom.

Walking tours in the town are highly recommended for anyone interested in deep history and culture. I sampled local Rakhine cuisine at the local market, discovering rich and unique flavors such as Rakhine curry with various spices and fresh fish from the Kaladan River. There were also dried seafood products sold in the market, perfect as souvenirs that I didn’t miss buying to take home.

Connecting with travels in Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake

Although Rakhine State is located in western Myanmar, the journey and lifestyle along the Kaladan River reminded me of Myanmar’s cultural diversity, similar to places I have visited before.Kachin Statewhich is the source of the Irrawaddy River, or even Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, where the Red Tai and Shan people live differently but remain connected to nature and water alike.Indawgyi Lakewhich I have previously written about, is another example of a water source that nourishes communities and nature in Myanmar.

Travel tips and advice for travelers

For travelers wanting to experience what I did, the boat trip from Sitwe to Mrauk U requires advance planning and preparation for the local weather and conditions. Although not complicated, contacting local boat operators will help ensure a smooth journey. The boat trip takes about half a day, but I recommend allowing extra time to visit riverside villages and photograph local lifestyles.

Don’t forget to bring sun protection, drinking water, and a camera to capture memorable moments. Talking with locals will help you understand perspectives and stories not found in common sources.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
