Eating Temple Food at Mawlamyine Ordination: A Burmese Temple Food Experience by mr.hotsia

I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to travel to Mawlamyine, one of Myanmar's key cities, where I truly experienced eating temple food as a novice monk. This Burmese temple food is simple yet valuable, full of the charm of local culture that is hard to find in big cities.

Mawlamyine is located in southern Myanmar, not far from the mouth of the Irrawaddy River, which deeply influences the life and culture of the local people. Traveling here reminded me ofthe origin of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin Statewhich I had visited before. This time, I delved into the food and lifestyle connected to religion and the simplicity of the Burmese people.

Lifestyle and Ordination Food at Mawlamyine Temple

During my visit to a temple in Mawlamyine, I had the opportunity to eat with monks and novice monks at this temple. The food served was mostly vegetarian, such as hot steamed rice, various stir-fried vegetables, bean curry, and tofu soup. All dishes excluded meat, garlic, and onions according to the Theravada Buddhist principles of Myanmar.

Although the flavors were simple, they were infused with the subtlety and depth of local herbs like galangal, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. I learned that cooking this way is like practicing meditation and calming the mind simultaneously.

The temple atmosphere was peaceful and simple. I spoke with several novice monks who shared that eating temple food like this helps them let go of worldly distractions and truly return to inner peace.

Travel and Connection with Burmese Culture

Traveling to Mawlamyine is not difficult. I chose to take a bus from Yangon, which took about 6-7 hours. Along the way, you can see the simple lifestyle of the Burmese people living in harmony with nature in an amazing way.

If you are passionate about local culture and food, I recommend stopping by Mawlamyine’s local market, which is full of fresh ingredients and rare local snacks like fried shrimp cakes and mango sticky rice. This will enrich your temple food experience.

For those interested in exploring Myanmar further, I have written stories about food and travel in other cities such asFood in Bagan, Myanmaror try riding a traditional horse cart inBagan, Myanmarto enjoy the old town atmosphere up close, which is equally fun.

What I Learned from Eating Temple Food

This experience deepened my understanding that eating temple food is not just a meal but a connection to the spirit and culture of Myanmar. The food here is not only about taste but a lesson in sufficiency, peace, and respect for nature.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend that everyone who has the chance to visit Myanmar try to spend a meal eating temple food at least once. I guarantee you will have a unique experience and gain new perspectives about Myanmar and the way of life of its people.
