What does Burmese fish look like? Take a look at Burmese fish with real experiences from mr.hotsia
When talking about Myanmar, many people probably think of the Irrawaddy River flowing through the country or Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, known for its beauty and natural diversity. But for me, mr.hotsia, another fascinating thing is the “Burmese fish” which has a unique appearance and lifestyle. Today, I will share my firsthand experience from my latest trip to Myanmar.
I had the chance to travel to natural water sources in northern Myanmar, areas not frequented by many tourists but full of local villagers who still closely depend on nature. This is the headwaters of the Irrawaddy River, where the Mekha and Mali rivers merge at a point called Myitsone, located in the territory ofKachin State
When I had the opportunity to take a boat out into the water to see the Burmese fish up close, what caught my eye was the fish’s appearance resembling common freshwater fish in Southeast Asia but distinguished by their colors and patterns. Some had shiny silver scales reflecting light beautifully, others had unusual mouths and fins. The locals call these Burmese fish. I also saw a fish similar to the Hilsa fish I had seen in videos from Bangladesh, but the Burmese fish were smaller and had slightly different patterns.
Fishing in the Irrawaddy River and around Myitsone was not easy for me because the locals use traditional methods like setting nets and hand-catching fish during low water. I tried this myself, feeling like I was stepping back in time to when people truly depended on nature. Seeing freshly caught fish reminded me of the Burmese food I had eaten inBaganor Pagan
Speaking of Burmese fish dishes, many may not have tasted them yet, but I assure you the flavor and freshness here are clearly different. I once ate steamed fish with hot steamed rice and fresh chili dipping sauce at a local restaurant in Bagan. It was absolutely delicious and should not be missed if you have a chance to travel to northern Myanmar.
Additionally, during my visit to Kachin State, I also stopped by Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, spanning over 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake are many Red Tai and Shan villages. This area is home to various bird species and aquatic animals, including fish with unique characteristics comparable to those from the Irrawaddy River.
If anyone is interested in experiencing the atmosphere and lifestyle of villagers in Kachin State, I recommend renting a motorcycle to explore the Myitsone area and Indawgyi Lake, where you can see lush nature and encounter uniquely looking Burmese fish.Kachin Stateis an area that still preserves the natural environment and fascinating tribal cultures. If you want to travel on your own, renting a motorcycle from a hotel in Myitkyina city is a good option, taking about an hour to reach.
For those who want to see the riverside lifestyle along the Irrawaddy River, I have recommended the riverside market in Pathein city. Here you can see locals selling fresh fish from the river, as well as various seafood and dried goods. If you want to see what Burmese fish look like, this market is quite an interesting spot.Irrawaddy Riverside Market, Pathein cityis full of colors and the chatter of locals, distinctly different from typical tourist markets.
Speaking of traveling in Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, have mentioned that in tourist cities like Bagan or Pagan, riding a horse carriage is another experience worth trying. Although the price is a bit high and the city views may not be spectacular, it offers a slow-paced atmosphere filled with ancient pagodas and temples, and a close look at the local lifestyle in Nyaung U city.Horse carriage ride in Bagan, Paganis an activity I recommend for those who enjoy relaxed, unhurried travel.
Street food in Myanmar is also very interesting, especially in Nyaung. Burmese food here ranges from local dishes to Western and Indian cuisine. I like to stop by “Shwe Yar Su” in Backpack Alley, which offers authentic Burmese food and Myanmar Beer Station beer, so good that I had to return multiple times.Street food in Nyaung, Mongyawng street food Myanmaris another vibrant aspect of traveling in Myanmar.
In summary, what does Burmese fish look like? For me, it’s not just about appearance but the story of a lifestyle connected to the rivers and waters of Myanmar. Every time I see these fish, I feel I am touching nature and culture that still truly exist. If you enjoy deep travel and learning from real experiences, don’t miss the chance to see Burmese fish and experience life along the Irrawaddy River inKachin Statewith me, mr.hotsia.
