Satisfying Burmese Homestay: Thai Food in the Heart of Myanmar at Palong House

When talking about traveling in Myanmar that mr.hotsia loves, besides enjoying the culture and nature, food is another key element that makes the journey flavorful and memorable. This time, I had the chance to visit a homestay in Myanmar called Palong House. This place is special because they serve authentic Thai food amidst the lifestyle of the Burmese people, making you feel like you're eating at home but surrounded by the true atmosphere of Southeast Asia.

Palong House is located in an area not yet crowded with tourists, creating a peaceful and natural surrounding atmosphere. It is a small homestay where the kind owner welcomes travelers. What impressed me most was the Thai food served for dinner, freshly made with local ingredients found in Myanmar, combined with authentic Thai seasoning that is rich and flavorful.

Dining Atmosphere at Palong House

I remember when mr.hotsia arrived at Palong House in the evening after a tiring journey in Kachin State (read more aboutKachin State). The homestay owner set up an outdoor table with warm orange lighting, surrounded by the sound of cicadas and the fragrance of herbs grown around the house. I tried the green chicken curry, which was rich and authentic Thai food—not too spicy but fully flavorful with the curry paste.

Besides the green curry, there were other interesting dishes such as tom yum goong with a sharp and tangy taste using fresh lime juice and large fresh shrimp from the local market, stir-fried morning glory that was crispy and delicious, and fragrant jasmine rice that completed the meal perfectly.

Local Lifestyle and Food in Myanmar

Eating Thai food in Myanmar at Palong House allowed mr.hotsia to deeply see the connection between the food cultures of these two countries. Many ingredients used in the Thai dishes here originate from or are grown in Myanmar, such as fresh chili, various herbs, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, all fresher and more fragrant than what we are used to in Thailand.

Interestingly, the locals still use traditional cooking methods, including charcoal stoves and clay pots, which give the food a unique depth and warmth different from modern kitchens. Additionally, I witnessed the simple yet joyful lifestyle of the Burmese people, especially during the warm moments when they gather to eat together.

Connecting with Travel in Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake

If you are planning a trip to explore Myanmar, mr.hotsia recommends stopping byKachin Statewhich is the source of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar's main river. There, you can experience beautiful nature and unique tribal cultures. Riding a motorcycle around Myitsone, the confluence of the Mali and Mekha rivers, is another impressive experience.

Another must-visit place is Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located in Mohnyin district of Kachin State. It is home to many rare bird species and communities of Red Thai, Shan, and Kachin people who have remarkably preserved their traditional way of life (read more atIndawgyi)

Travel and Tips for Travelers

For traveling to Palong House, I recommend preparing well for rural travel in Myanmar, as roads may not be as convenient as in big cities. Renting a motorcycle or using local car services will help you access the homestay more easily. Also, remember to bring a face mask as some roads can be dusty.

During my visit to Palong House, I felt the warmth of the locals and the delicious food that made every meal a heartfelt memory. For those who love to travel with a focus on food and want to deeply experience Burmese lifestyle, I highly recommend staying and eating here at least once.
