The Charm of Burmese Girls Cooking by the Bay of Bengal: An Experience Eating with Pathein Girls at Ngwesung Beach

When I, mr.hotsia, think of Myanmar, the image that always comes to mind is cheerful Burmese girls with bright smiles by the seaside. This time, I had the chance to visit the Bay of Bengal coast at Ngwesung Beach near Pathein. Although not a major tourist spot, this place is full of local charm and an exciting food culture unlike anywhere I've experienced before.

Ngwesung Beach is located in Pathein Province, an important port city in this part of Myanmar. Its proximity to the Bay of Bengal means fresh seafood is available daily from local fishermen. I traveled by car from Yangon, passing through roads that still retain the raw and simple countryside feel of Myanmar. Seeing the simple yet happy lifestyle of the locals, I felt like I had traveled back in time to an era when eating was not just about food but a heartfelt connection between the eater and the maker.

Atmosphere and the Charm of Burmese Girls by the Beach

At Ngwesung Beach, I met Pathein Burmese girls skilled in seaside cooking—from chopping fresh vegetables, seasoning with perfect spices, to grilling fresh sea fish over charcoal. The aroma of fish curry blended with the sea breeze created a relaxing atmosphere that made me lose track of time.

The girls here are not just food servers but hosts who introduce me to unique dishes. There was Hilsa fish, famous in this region and considered a national treasure of the Bay of Bengal area, and grilled dishes perfectly blended with local spices. I, mr.hotsia, ate while listening to their stories about daily life, dreams, and hopes openly in Burmese, trying my best to understand and respond sincerely.

Must-Try Seaside Dishes

The dish that impressed me most was the “Hilsa Curry,” made with fresh Hilsa fish from the sea. This dish had a well-balanced flavor with a slight sourness from tamarind and the heat of fresh chili, enhancing the sweet and rich taste of the fish. I had seen this fish in videos about Bangladesh (see more atDeep Dive into Bangladesh EP 52), but Myanmar also has its unique way of presenting it.

Besides Hilsa curry, I also tried hot sticky rice paired with grilled fish and fresh local vegetables, eating on the sandy shore while listening to the waves crashing nearby. This was an experience I, mr.hotsia, could not find in big cities or fancy restaurants.

Connecting with the Lifestyle and Culture of Myanmar by the Bay of Bengal

Visiting the Bay of Bengal coast at Ngwesung Beach reminded me of Myanmar's diversity from my travels, includingKachin Statewith the main Irrawaddy River or Indawgyi Lake, rich in nature and interesting ethnic communities (Indawgyi). Visiting here completes the overall picture of Myanmar from a different perspective—nature, culture, and cuisine.

In the evening, I, mr.hotsia, took a walk at the riverside market in Pathein (Irrawaddy Riverside Market, Pathein) to observe local life, trade, and experience the charm of a port city that has impressively preserved its traditions.

Summary of Impressions from Ngwesung Beach

“The Charm of Burmese Girls Cooking by the Bay of Bengal” at Ngwesung Beach is not just about food but about the connection between a traveler like me and the local people. The warmth and sincerity from the local Burmese girls made me feel like I found deep friendship in this world.

If anyone is looking for a unique travel experience in Myanmar, come and enjoy the atmosphere by the Bay of Bengal at Ngwesung Beach with Pathein girls. Eating fresh seafood accompanied by laughter and genuine conversation will be a memorable experience for a long time.
