ep2 The White Elephant Found in the Forest of Thai Red Shan Land, Indawgyi, Myanmar

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel deep into the forests around Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. The first feeling upon experiencing Indawgyi was the peacefulness and the well-preserved natural beauty. The vast lake is surrounded by villages of the Tai Red Shan and Kachin people. Looking out to the horizon, the dark green water contrasts with the towering mountains that encircle the area.

This journey was not just about enjoying beautiful views; I intended to search for the white elephant in the Indawgyi forest, a sacred and extremely rare animal. I rented a boat from a lakeside guesthouse to explore the well-preserved forest area, which is a strictly protected wildlife sanctuary. It was not easy to trek through the dense forest filled with diverse plants and wildlife, but with determination, mr.hotsia ventured deep into tall grass and thick woods until we found signs of wild elephants. The most exciting moment was when my eyes caught sight of a “white elephant” standing gracefully in the soft sunlight filtering through the large trees. The white elephant is not just white all over but a uniquely rare creature in nature. I could hardly believe my eyes, but this image confirmed its existence in this tranquil land.

Indawgyi is not just an ordinary lake; it is the vital heart of the ecosystem inKachin Statewhere the headwaters of the Irrawaddy River begin to flow. The area around the lake is home to Tai Red Shan and Kachin villages that still maintain traditional ways of life. My journey was not only about nature but also about experiencing the local people's lifestyle. Most villagers engage in agriculture and fishing in Indawgyi Lake, creating a simple and warm atmosphere.

During my stay, I tried local dishes prepared by the Tai Red Shan and Kachin people. The flavors were fresh, using natural ingredients directly from the environment, such as river fish caught from the lake, cooked into rich curries served with hot sticky rice and spicy dipping sauces typical of Burmese cuisine. It was a memorable meal that energized me for further trekking.

Traveling in this area can be challenging because the routes are not well developed, but this is an advantage that keeps nature intact. Visitors can experience a true adventure just like I did. mr.hotsia recommends preparing both physically and mentally because you will encounter things that are hard to find anywhere else.
