ep6 Found the White Elephant in the Forest of Thai Red Women in Indawgyi, Myanmar
Hello readers, today mr.hotsia will take everyone to explore the mysterious land in Myanmar where I had the chance to encounter the “White Elephant,” an animal considered a symbol of luck and wonder in the legends of the Myanmar and Thai Red people. This is “Indawgyi” or Indawgyi Lake inKachin StateA land full of nature and the unique lifestyle of indigenous tribes
This journey was not easy because Indawgyi is located in a remote area. Access requires traveling on dirt roads and winding mountain paths. But upon arrival, the sight immediately made all fatigue disappear. The vast lake, measuring 13 by 24 kilometers, with clear clean water surrounded by villages of the Thai Red and Shan tribes who still firmly preserve their traditional way of life.
I rented a motorcycle from Mohnyin town heading to Indawgyi Lake, which took over an hour. Each village passed had stories to learn from, including culture and unique local cuisine. I had the chance to taste local dishes of the Thai Red people, focusing on fresh ingredients from the local area and the Irrawaddy River, which has been Myanmar’s lifeline since ancient times (Read about the Irrawaddy River and Kachin State here)
Indawgyi Lake is not only beautiful nature-wise but also an important wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. Many rare species live here, especially rare birds and mammals. I was excited by the sounds of birds and the scent of lush forest surrounding the lake.
But the highlight of this trip that mr.hotsia awaited was to see the “White Elephant,” which locals say is a sacred and very rare animal. I set out at dawn with villagers who had arranged to meet in the forest near the lake, using a boat to paddle through swamp forests and small streams filled with cricket sounds and echoing bird calls.
Along the way, I had the chance to talk with a Thai Red woman who takes care of lakeside homes. She told me that the white elephant is a symbol of the forest’s abundance and the heart of the community here because it is not only a rare animal but also a belief deeply connected to their daily way of life.
Finally, in the late afternoon, I saw the silhouette of a pale pinkish-white elephant in the distance, under sunlight filtering through leaves. The large animal walked gracefully through a small stream near the village. It was an unforgettable image. The softness of light and shadow of the white elephant reflected the beauty that mr.hotsia always seeks in every journey.
Traveling in Indawgyi is not just about enjoying nature but also experiencing the lifestyle of Myanmar’s Thai Red and Shan people who still strongly preserve their identity, culture, and close bond with nature. It is a truly heartwarming experience for a traveler like me.
For those interested in experiencing this atmosphere, mr.hotsia recommends preparing for travel, rest, and respectful, understanding contact with local people, and don’t forget to visitKachin Statewhich is not far away and another destination I have written about before.
