Hakha 11: Visiting the Strawberry Garden in Hakha, Chin State, Myanmar
When talking about Hakha in Chin State, Myanmar, which I, mr.hotsia, have personally traveled to experience, many might think of a small town surrounded by high mountains and thick fog. But one thing many don’t know is that there is a very interesting strawberry garden here for those who want to experience authentic rural life and nature in Myanmar.
I arrived in Hakha early in the morning when the weather was still comfortably cool, covered by a thin mist, a rare atmosphere in many big cities. Coming here reminded me ofKachin Statelocated in northeastern Myanmar, where I previously experienced the nature and culture of the Red Tai and Kachin people. But Hakha in Chin State has a different charm and atmosphere. It is a small town that still maintains a simple lifestyle and a close connection to nature.
Hakha Strawberry Garden: Freshness from the High Mountains
Traveling to Hakha’s strawberry garden is not very difficult. I rented a motorcycle from the town at a reasonable price, about 300-350 baht per day, which was very worthwhile for the adventure on beautiful mountain roads and experiencing the local villagers’ way of life along the way.
The route to the strawberry garden is full of complex mountain views and small villages where locals still grow traditional crops. I stopped to chat with the friendly and smiling villagers. They told me that strawberry cultivation in Hakha suits the cool climate and fertile soil, resulting in especially sweet and fragrant fruit.
Upon arriving at the strawberry garden, I walked through wide fields full of fresh, bright red strawberry plants. It felt like being in a fruit garden back home. I tried picking fresh strawberries straight from the plants; the sweet and slightly sour taste was so refreshing that I had to buy some to take home as gifts.
Lifestyle and Culture in Hakha
Besides the strawberry garden, exploring the lifestyle of the local people in Hakha town was equally interesting. The small market in town offers local foods to try, such as sticky rice with local vegetable curry, Chin-style chili paste, and traditional snacks made from fresh mountain ingredients.
I, mr.hotsia, tried to talk with locals to better understand their way of life. Many still live simply, growing vegetables, farming, and raising animals at home. This trip reminded me of my previous travel experiencesHakha 17: Travel Information for Hakha Townwhich I shared before, showing that Hakha is a town worth exploring with its unique charm.
