Made-to-Order Hakka, Hakha City, Kachin State, Myanmar
When talking about Myanmar, many people might think of Bagan, Pagan, or Yangon, but for me, mr.hotsia, visitingHakha City (Hakha)in Kachin State (Kachin) is a truly unique experience. This small town hidden in the northernmost valley of Myanmar is full of tranquility, indigenous lifestyles that remain traditional, and made-to-order dishes that I can honestly say are hard to find anywhere else.
Traveling to Hakha is not easy, but for those who love challenges and want to experience the true depth of Myanmar, this is the answer. I chose to travel from Myitkyina, an important city inKachin Statewhich is the source of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar's main river. This route is full of high mountains and beautiful scenery. At times, I rented a motorcycle to ride through small villages where locals still live simply. I stopped to chat with locals and truly saw their way of life and warmth.
Lifestyle and Made-to-Order Food in Hakha
What impressed me most in Hakha was the local made-to-order food. There are small eateries tucked in alleys. I remember one called “Made-to-Order Hakha,” a small shop run by community members. The homely atmosphere was filled with the aroma of local spices and herbs. I ordered Kachin-style fried rice with fresh mountain vegetables and freshly grilled meat. The flavor was rich and balanced from Hakha’s unique seasonings.
Additionally, I tried a local curry with a unique taste and just the right amount of spiciness. It made me feel that the food here is not just about deliciousness but also reflects the culture and geography of the community clearly.
Markets and Travel in Hakha
The market in Hakha is another spot I didn’t miss. It offers a wide range of goods from fresh vegetables and fruits to local products. I browsed the items and talked with local vendors, learning that most Kachin people focus on mountain agriculture and animal husbandry. The market is full of fresh natural products and handmade woven goods. There are many made-to-order food stalls by the market; I tried sticky rice with Kachin chili paste, which was truly flavorful.
Traveling in Hakha is unlike big cities because most roads are still dirt and gravel, requiring pickup trucks or motorcycles. I rented a motorcycle to explore the town and nearby villages, seeing rice fields and wooden houses hidden on hillsides. It’s a feeling you won’t find in typical tourist cities.
Connection with Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake
If you want to fully explore Kachin State, mr.hotsia recommends visitingIndawgyi Lakewhich is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located not far from Hakha. It has rich nature and is an important wildlife sanctuary, including interesting Shan and Red Tai ethnic communities. I have previously written about the travel and lifestyles there. Nature lovers and bird watchers will definitely enjoy it.
Visiting Hakha and Kachin State overall is experiencing Myanmar from a true perspective—not just well-managed tourist spots but the simplicity of people and nature that remains intact. I, mr.hotsia, guarantee that if you come to see and experience it yourself, you will feel that “Made-to-Order Hakha” is not just a restaurant name but the true flavor of this city that stays in my heart.
