Burmese Crepe in Hpa An: A small taste from Myanmar that mr.hotsia must share

When talking about Hpa An in Myanmar, many might think of lush nature, limestone mountains, and the mighty Irrawaddy River. But for me, mr.hotsia, one thing that makes this city memorable besides the atmosphere is the “Burmese Crepe,” a small local snack full of flavor and impression that I tasted myself on site.

When I arrived in Hpa An, I chose to stay in a modest, lesser-known town, which allowed me to experience the authentic lifestyle of the locals. Walking through the morning market and narrow streets bustling with food vendors, one of the foods that caught my eye was a stall selling thin Burmese crepes freshly made right there.

Burmese crepes differ from Western crepes in that the batter is perfectly mixed—not too thick or thin—with a slight crispness yet still flexible. Inside, the crepes usually contain various fillings such as seasoned chicken, minced pork, or even fresh vegetables that add freshness. I remember the taste here wasn’t overly sweet like some places in Thailand but had a balanced salty, sweet, and mildly spicy flavor from perfectly blended spices. It’s a great snack for strolling around or taking a break.

Travel and Experience the Lifestyle of Hpa An

Hpa An is located along the mighty Irrawaddy River flowing through Myanmar. This river originates from northern Kachin State, which I have mentioned in my articles.Kachin StateI have said that the Irrawaddy River is the lifeblood of Myanmar, and Hpa An is one of the spots where this river flows, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere.

Getting to Hpa An is not difficult. I chose to travel by bus from the major city Yangon, which took about 5-6 hours. The roads leading in showed the changing landscape—from paved roads to red dirt roads surrounded by rice fields and towering limestone mountains all along the way.

Within the city, walking or renting a motorcycle is a good way to explore various spots around Hpa An. I chose to stroll through the morning market and roadside eateries. Here you will see diverse street food, including traditional Burmese snacks and dishes influenced by neighboring countries like Thailand and China.

Burmese Crepe: A Food that Tells Cultural Stories

If you have the chance to visit Hpa An, don’t miss trying the unique Burmese crepe here. I, mr.hotsia, guarantee that the taste and preparation of these crepes are special, unlike anywhere else in Myanmar or even Southeast Asia.

The crepe stall owner I met was an elderly lady who has been making crepes for decades. She told me that making the crepe requires a flour mix based on a secret family recipe, and the fillings change seasonally depending on locally available ingredients.

I noticed these crepe stalls are often located near markets or walking streets where community members gather to shop and chat warmly. Sitting and eating crepes while watching people pass by is an experience I will never forget.

Connecting to Myanmar’s Diversity

If you love traveling and eating like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend also visiting other beautiful natural and cultural spots in Myanmar, such as Indawgyi Lake inKachin Statewhich is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Or if you enjoy food and morning market atmospheres typical of Myanmar not far away, try visiting Bagan.Food in Bagan, MyanmarOr take a horse carriage to explore the ancient city ofNyaung-Uwhich is a memorable experience.

All of this helped me see that Myanmar has many charms—from nature, local lifestyles, to diverse food including the lesser-known Burmese crepe that truly represents the deliciousness of Hpa An.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions from Hpa An

For me, having experienced it firsthand, Burmese crepes in Hpa An are not just ordinary snacks but a tangible experience of culture and a simple yet charming way of life. Eating hot crepes amid the bustling morning market and the aroma of spices, I believe everyone visiting Myanmar should find the chance to visit Hpa An and try these crepes at least once.
