If you think traveling in Myanmar is just about big cities or popular places like Bagan or Mandalay, and that’s not enough, listen to my real travel experience, mr.hotsia, in the deep alleys of Kachin State — a land many have yet to experience. But for me, Indawgyi Lake here is the real deal!

Indawgyi Lake is located in Mohnyin District of Kachin State. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, approximately 13 kilometers wide from east to west and 24 kilometers long from north to south. Around the lake, there are over 20 villages where locals live peacefully, mostly Tai Red or Shan people and Kachin ethnic groups who lead simple yet warm-hearted lives.

The first time I, mr.hotsia, arrived at Indawgyi Lake, I must say the atmosphere here is completely different from the Myanmar we usually know. The emerald green lake water reflects the blue sky and lush green mountains surrounding it. The tranquility makes you feel like you’ve stepped out of the chaotic world into a place where time stands still.

Travel and Access to the Deep Alleys of Indawgyi

For traveling to Indawgyi Lake, I recommend starting from Mohnyin town, the travel hub of Kachin State. Then rent a motorcycle or hire a local vehicle to visit the villages around the lake. Riding a motorcycle here lets you closely experience nature and the local way of life, but be cautious as some roads are still dirt tracks with potholes.

I, mr.hotsia, suggest bringing a helmet and dust protection gear because some alleys leading to the lake are narrow roads requiring careful driving. Also, the cool breeze passing through Tai Red and Kachin villages makes this journey even more memorable.

Lifestyle and Culture Around Indawgyi Lake

When venturing deep into the lakeside villages, I saw locals practicing traditional agriculture — growing rice, vegetables, and raising livestock simply. They strongly preserve their customs and local languages, especially the Tai Red ethnic group with their unique language and culture.

Additionally, the locals have a deep connection with the lake, relying on fishing as their main livelihood and using small boats to travel between surrounding villages. Indawgyi Lake is also home to many rare wildlife species, especially water birds that are hard to find in this region. Since 1999, there has been a serious effort to establish wildlife and nature conservation zones around the lake.

If you visit Indawgyi, don’t miss the local food! I, mr.hotsia, tried fresh-caught freshwater fish prepared in traditional ways, including spicy fish salad and rich, flavorful fish curry. There’s also sticky rice and fresh seasonal vegetables grown locally. The food tastes simple yet deeply flavorful — a dining experience I will never forget.
