Gathering for a meal with the Red Tai people at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar
When it comes to a journey that made me, mr.hotsia, feel like I traveled back in time to truly experience the authentic way of life of the people, visiting Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar is one unforgettable experience. This is not just an ordinary freshwater lake but a vibrant habitat where the Red Tai people and other ethnic groups such as the Shan and Kachin come together to form a warm and truly beautiful community.
Indawgyi Lake is located in the Mohnyin administrative area of Kachin State. It spans 13 kilometers east to west and 24 kilometers north to south. The lake is surrounded by more than 20 villages. It sits approximately 166 meters above sea level and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 to preserve biodiversity, especially rare wildlife and bird species.
My journey began with a boat ride from a small guesthouse by the lake to visit the Red Tai villages here. The atmosphere I encountered was unlike anywhere else in Myanmar. The people here still live simply, relying on nature and practicing agriculture. As the boat glided over the clear water, fish swam beneath, and the lake was filled with various birds. Especially in January, you can see Greylag geese and Oriental darters flying across the sky.
Gathering for a Meal with the Red Tai People
One of the most memorable moments for me, mr.hotsia, was gathering for a meal with the Red Tai people at a lakeside village. I was welcomed with genuine smiles and warmth. The villagers cook simple home-style meals using natural ingredients from their surroundings — sticky rice from community rice fields, freshly caught river fish, and homegrown local vegetables.
The dishes I tasted included a spicy fish curry made with fish from Indawgyi Lake, fragrant roasted corn chili paste, and boiled vegetables served with a flavorful dipping sauce. There was also fragrant sticky rice paired with grilled pork and local herbs. Every bite felt like receiving energy and love from the cooks.
Gathering for a meal like this is not just about food but an exchange of life stories, cultural ways, and strong community bonds. Even though I was a stranger, the friendliness of the Red Tai people made me feel like I was home.
Lifestyle and Travel in Kachin State
Kachin State itself is an area rich in natural and cultural charm. I, mr.hotsia, have written about traveling to the source of the Irrawaddy River at Mitzina, which is not far from Indawgyi (read more atKachin State). Travel in this state mostly still uses traditional methods such as renting motorcycles or using rowboats to move between villages. Experiencing this lifestyle gives a deep understanding of the relationship between people and the surrounding nature.
There are no paved roads here. Tourists who want to experience real life must be prepared to face dirt roads and dust. But trust me, the beauty of Indawgyi Lake and the warmth of the locals make every hardship worthwhile.
What You Should Know Before Visiting Indawgyi Lake
For nature lovers and bird watchers, Indawgyi is a must-visit place. During winter, many bird species migrate here, making it an important birdwatching site in Myanmar. Also, when visiting Red Tai villages, it is essential to respect their way of life and traditions. Always ask permission before taking photos and avoid showing surprise or alienation towards their lifestyle.
Regarding food, I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying local dishes made from fresh community ingredients because the flavors here differ greatly from central or southern Myanmar cuisine.
