Red Shan Woman at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar
When talking about the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, one of the places I, mr.hotsia, must recommend everyone to experience is “Indawgyi Lake,” located in Kachin State, Myanmar.
Traveling to Indawgyi Lake is not as easy as visiting big cities, but this difficulty becomes the charm of the journey because it allows us to truly experience the pristine nature and the local way of life. The lake is situated in the Mohnyin administrative area of Kachin State, a region I have previously written about.Kachin StateThis area is the source of the great Irrawaddy River that flows through Myanmar and is a vital lifeline for the country.
Indawgyi Lake is approximately 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake, there are more than 20 villages living simply, mostly inhabited by the Red Shan people, also known as “Shan,” an ethnic group with culture and language closely related to the Thai people in Thailand, along with some Kachin residents. Their lifestyle remains traditional, relying mainly on agriculture and fishing in the lake.
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to take a boat ride on Indawgyi Lake, paddling through clear waters reflecting the blue sky and surrounding mountains. It felt like being in a world that still retains its purest form. The cool breeze brushed my face, and the sounds of birds and water hitting the boat created a natural symphony not found in big cities.
Indawgyi Lake was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 by Myanmar’s Ecotourism Ministry because it is home to rare wildlife and many waterbird species. Notably, Greylag geese and spot-billed pelicans are clearly visible in January. There are also rare purple swamphens. This biodiversity makes Indawgyi Lake a destination for bird watchers and conservationists worldwide.
I recommend preparing well for the journey to Indawgyi, as roads are still underdeveloped. You must travel by car from nearby major towns and sometimes transfer to boats or local vehicles to reach various villages. However, all these efforts are rewarded with a unique and worthwhile experience.
Experience the Red Shan Way of Life by Indawgyi Lake
Here, I met Red Shan women still wearing brightly colored traditional costumes with intricate patterns on their skirts and shawls. They warmly welcomed tourists with bright smiles. During my visit, a local festival was held showcasing the Red Shan lifestyle and culture, including traditional dances, folk music performances, and even traditional cooking using ingredients from the lake and their agricultural gardens.
The food here is flavorful and rich with fresh ingredients such as freshly caught lake fish, local vegetables, and unique spices. I, mr.hotsia, tried carefully prepared Red Shan local dishes that were intensely flavorful with a slight spiciness. It was an experience that truly reflected the region’s unique identity. The Atmosphere and Tranquility of Indawgyi Lake
This lake is not just a large water body but also a home where community and nature coexist harmoniously. I, mr.hotsia, recommend anyone who loves nature tourism and wants to escape the hustle of big cities to experience this place at least once. The journey here will let you see the Red Shan way of life up close and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Various birds fly by, and the gentle waves lapping the shore create natural music that calms the soul unbelievably.
For accommodation around the lake, there are guesthouses and local homestays, which I have tried and was very impressed with. You get to taste home-cooked meals, sleep in a simple atmosphere, and wake up to a stunning sunrise over the lake.
