Red Shan women and Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar

When it comes to travel destinations that I, mr.hotsia, have personally experienced in Myanmar, Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake are among the most impressive places I want to share in detail. Indawgyi Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, located in the Mohnyin administrative area of Kachin State. It perfectly blends natural beauty, indigenous lifestyles, and diverse tribal cultures.

As a traveler who loves to delve into local lifestyles and cultures, I had the opportunity to meet the Red Shan people, also known as “Shan,” the main ethnic group living around Indawgyi Lake. Besides the Red Shan, there are many Kachin communities engaged mainly in agriculture and fishing. Their way of life reflects a deep connection with nature and this lake, which is about 166 meters above sea level.

Travel and Atmosphere Around the Lake

Reaching Indawgyi Lake is not easy, as the roads and paths are partly dirt and winding. But once you arrive, you will feel that every drop of sweat was worth it. There are over 20 villages around the lake where you can stop to observe and learn about local life. I, mr.hotsia, recommend renting a boat from small guesthouses in the villages to cruise the lake and enjoy nature up close. Especially in January, many bird species like Greylag geese and Oriental darters come to live and feed actively—an unmissable time for bird watchers.

Indawgyi Lake was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 under the supervision of Myanmar’s Ecotourism Ministry. Covering an area of 780 square kilometers, it has become an important conservation area for rare wildlife and wild birds, ideal for nature lovers seeking true tranquility.

Experience Red Shan Lifestyle at the Lakeside Village

One of the most memorable experiences for me, mr.hotsia, was talking and learning about the lifestyle of Red Shan women in a small lakeside village. They still wear their traditional colorful and distinctive costumes, such as floral patterned skirts and tribal headbands. Seeing them work in agriculture—growing rice, vegetables, and raising fish in the lake—gives a sense of simple yet deeply fulfilling rural life.

Additionally, Red Shan women are skilled in preparing local dishes using fresh ingredients from the lake and surrounding land. I tried several rare local dishes, such as spicy freshwater fish curry and fragrant rice grown locally. These foods reflect the culture and wisdom passed down from ancestors.

Connecting Experiences with Kachin State

For those interested in expanding their travel experience in Kachin State, I, mr.hotsia, recommend continuing to the source of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone, about 40 kilometers from Indawgyi Lake. Traveling to Myitsone is convenient if you rent a motorcycle from your accommodation, allowing you to fully enjoy the roadside villages and surrounding nature.Kachin StateThis is the starting point of a very interesting journey in Myanmar.

The Irrawaddy River originates from the confluence of the Mekha and Mali rivers at Myitsone. It is a vital waterway that has sustained the lives of people in Myanmar for generations. Seeing this river flow through lush landscapes and riverside villages gave me, mr.hotsia, a profound sense of its grandeur and cultural significance.

Travel Planning and Tips for Tourists

For anyone planning to visit Indawgyi Lake and Kachin State, one thing I, mr.hotsia, want to emphasize is to prepare for travel and language. This area still has few foreign tourists, and Burmese and local Shan languages are mainly used for communication. Having a local guide or acquaintance is very helpful.

There are several small guesthouses around the lake offering simple and warm accommodations where you can truly experience local life. You can also rent rowboats to explore the lake’s nature and birdlife. Don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and personal essentials, as some areas remain very natural and facilities may be limited.

Closing Remarks from mr.hotsia

Indawgyi Lake and the Red Shan women of Kachin State are among the experiences I, mr.hotsia, am proud to present. Beyond rare natural beauty, it opens our eyes to cultural diversity and the deep relationship between people and their land. If you enjoy unhurried travel and want to learn about authentic local lifestyles, this is a destination not to be missed.
