Cooking with Red Shan Women at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar

When talking about one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, the name “Indawgyi Lake” in Kachin State, Myanmar, must be among the top recommended by mr.hotsia for everyone to experience themselves. This lake is not only a beautiful natural tourist destination but also home to the Red Shan people, also known as “Shan,” as well as many Kachin communities living around the lake. This place is full of cultural charm and exciting local cuisine.

Traveling to Indawgyi Lake is considered a challenging and fun experience for mr.hotsia because it requires passing through Kachin State’s routes that remain pristine and highly rural. The lake itself is about 13 kilometers wide and approximately 24 kilometers long. Around the lake, there are more than 20 villages scattered at an elevation of 166 meters above sea level, where most villagers engage in agriculture and fishing.

Lifestyle and Culture of Red Shan Women

One of the most impressive experiences mr.hotsia deeply encountered was cooking with Red Shan women in a small village by Indawgyi Lake. Here, they have preserved their traditional lifestyle firmly, especially their unique culinary practices. I witnessed the preparation of local dishes using fresh ingredients from the lake and surrounding vegetable gardens, such as freshwater fish caught from the lake and homegrown local herbs.

The dish that impressed me the most was the “rich fish curry” made by the Red Shan women. The curry’s flavor was spicy yet balanced, fragrant with a blend of spices and herbs that gave a warm feeling, like telling the story of a simple but strong community life. Additionally, hot sticky rice was served alongside fresh vegetables and a special chili paste recipe that varies from household to household.

Nature and Biodiversity at Indawgyi

Indawgyi Lake is not only known for its calm waters and surrounding villages but also as an important wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. Since 1999, the government has declared this area a wildlife sanctuary covering over 780 square kilometers, which mr.hotsia considers a fortunate place for the world to still have.

This area is home to various mammals and bird species, some of which are endangered, such as the Greylag goose and the bar-headed goose that mr.hotsia observed by boat in January, the peak season when these birds gather. Boating to watch the lake and birds is a peaceful and exciting experience. It is recommended to rent a boat from guesthouses in villages near the lake to enjoy this special atmosphere.

Connection to Kachin State and Myitsone

For adventure lovers like mr.hotsia, visiting Indawgyi Lake is an eye-opening experience because Kachin State is located in the same area as the Kachin State, which is the source of the well-known Irrawaddy River.Kachin StateIt holds great historical and natural significance. The Irrawaddy River’s headwaters originate here, and there are villages inhabited by native Red Shan speakers and other ethnic groups.

I once stopped by Myitsone, the confluence where the Mekha and Mali rivers join to form the Irrawaddy River. Traveling there is quite challenging and requires good preparation, but seeing the scenery and local life made it very worthwhile. More details can be found in mr.hotsia’s article aboutKachin State

Travel and Accommodation Recommendations

Traveling to Indawgyi Lake mostly requires a car or bus from major cities like Mandalay or nearby towns. The roads are mostly dirt and gravel. However, since this place is not yet popular among tourists, it remains peaceful with almost no noise or air pollution.

Accommodations around Indawgyi Lake are mostly small guesthouses run by locals. You will experience authentic rural atmosphere and fresh local food. mr.hotsia recommends booking in advance during the tourist season for convenience and safety.

Video Clip and Cooking Show with Red Shan Women

Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia

Indawgyi Lake is not just an ordinary tourist destination but a place full of cultural stories, lifestyles, and amazing biodiversity. Visiting here made me, mr.hotsia, feel like traveling back in time to experience the simple life of the Red Shan and Kachin people who have truly preserved their identity.

For those who enjoy travel combining nature and culture, I recommend planning a trip here at least once. I guarantee you will gain experiences and stories beyond your expectations.
