Kalay Myanmar: Eating Burmese Chicken Curry at Hakha Bus Stop
Kalay, or as locals call it Kalay, is a small town in Myanmar that I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to pass through while traveling to Kachin State. The atmosphere of this town feels truly rural, without the hustle or modernity we are familiar with in big cities. But what impressed me the most was the experience of eating local food at Hakha Kalay bus stop. This place is a rest stop that offers not only delicious food but also stories and the lifestyle of the locals that I want to share.
I traveled by bus from a nearby town to Kalay. Along the way, I saw mountain and rice field scenery alternating with small villages that still strongly preserve Burmese identity. When I arrived at Hakha Kalay bus stop, I explored the area and found various Burmese food stalls. But what caught my attention the most was the fragrant smell of Burmese chicken curry that drew me in.
A Unique Burmese Chicken Curry
The chicken curry here is different from what I have eaten in Thailand or other countries I have passed through. The chicken is tender and infused with spices, the aroma of curry mixed with freshly grated coconut. The flavor is rich but not overly spicy. Served with freshly steamed rice, every bite reflects the care and dedication of the local cook.
This stall is located roadside at Hakha bus stop. People often stop here to eat before continuing their journey or waiting for a bus to other destinations like Kachin State, which is famous for its nature and diverse culture. I spoke with the cook, a local villager, who told me the stall has been open for many years and the chicken curry is a best-selling dish loved by both locals and travelers like me.
Lifestyle and Local Market in Kalay
Besides food, the small market around the bus stop is another place I enjoyed walking through. Here you can find seasonal vegetables and fruits, local snacks, and various goods sold by villagers. This market atmosphere reminded me of the riverside market along the Irrawaddy River in Pathein, which is another travel spot I have written about.Riverside Market along the Irrawaddy River in Pathein, MyanmarThat place shares similarities in lifestyle and trade practices that remain natural and authentic.
Although Kalay is not a major tourist city, if you like to study the real lifestyle of Burmese people living near Kachin State, stopping here offers a more genuine atmosphere than typical tourist areas.
Connection to Kachin State and Further Travel
After recharging with Burmese chicken curry, I planned to continue traveling to Kachin State, an area rich in natural and cultural significance, as I have described in my article.Exploring the Source of the Irrawaddy River, Mitgina, Kachin State, MyanmarKachin State is home to the important source of the Irrawaddy River and also the Indawgyi Lake, a globally recognized wildlife sanctuary.
Traveling from Kalay to these areas may take a long time and requires good preparation. But for me, who enjoys challenges and deeply experiencing local lifestyles, sitting and eating chicken curry at Hakha bus stop is one of the memories that completes this journey.
Travel Tips
If you plan to travel to Kalay or around Kachin State, it is recommended to prepare some language and communication skills because most people here speak Burmese and local languages. However, the kindness and friendliness of the Burmese people will make you feel warmly at home.
Regarding food, try local dishes like the chicken curry I mentioned to experience authentic flavors not found in big city restaurants. Also, make time to explore the lifestyle and markets in the area, as they are the charm that makes your trip unique.
