Kalay (Kalay), the Myo city of Myanmar

When talking about a city that many might not be familiar with in Myanmar, Kalay, or locally called “Myo,” is a city that I, mr.hotsia, have personally traveled to experience. The charm of this city is not in its fame or widely known tourist attractions, but rather in its life and local way of living that remains truly simple and warm.

Kalay is located in the Sagaing Division in the northwest of Myanmar. It is a city near the borders of India and Bangladesh, making it a very interesting cultural connection point. Traveling to Kalay is not easy for foreign tourists, but for those who love to deeply explore real lifestyles and want to escape the hustle and bustle, Kalay is the choice I, mr.hotsia, would recommend.

Travel and Life in Kalay

I traveled to Kalay by land through various towns in Myanmar. This route includes both dirt roads and paved roads alternately. The scenery along the way is full of rice fields and small mountains, including villages with traditional wooden houses with thatched roofs. The locals live simply, mostly engaged in agriculture and community trade.

Many times I stopped at local markets in Kalay, witnessing the lively community gathering to buy and sell goods such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and dried products directly from local farms. There are also local snacks to try. What impressed me was the spicy flavor of the curry and the sweet fragrance of the tropical fruits here, which differ from what I have tasted in Myanmar’s big cities.

Food in Kalay

Kalay’s cuisine focuses on fresh local ingredients such as freshwater fish from local rivers, native vegetables, and unique spices. I, mr.hotsia, tried fish curry with fresh herbs, which was rich in flavor but very balanced, with both sour and moderately spicy tastes. Sticky rice is the staple food of the Tai Yai people in this area. Sometimes I chose to eat sticky rice with boiled vegetables and fish larb, which truly gave a sense of local authenticity.

In Kalay’s night market, there are also interesting local snack and dessert stalls. I enjoyed walking around and picking snacks to try while exploring the city. The simplicity and freshness of the ingredients give the food here a unique charm unlike anywhere else.

Lifestyle and Culture

Kalay is a city that still strongly preserves the traditional culture of the Tai Yai and other ethnic groups in Myanmar. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to talk with many locals who shared that life here emphasizes mutual support within the community, and Theravada Buddhism remains an important part of daily life.

I visited small temples in the city. Kalay has temples built of wood with beautiful local art. Inside the temples, monks sit in meditation and chant in a peaceful atmosphere. I felt a sense of friendliness and tranquility rarely found in big cities.

Connection to the Broader Context of Myanmar

For those who have followed my work, mr.hotsia, you know I enjoy traveling deeply to source areas and natural regions such asKachin Statewhich is the origin of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s main river. Kalay is not far from this area, allowing me to combine nature exploration and deep cultural visits perfectly during my travels.

Also, traveling to Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia located in Kachin State, is one of the routes I like to recommend for those who want to experience the beauty of nature and learn about the lifestyles of the Shan and Red Tai people in Myanmar.Indawgyi LakeHighly biodiverse and a premier birdwatching site

Recommended Videos and Real Experiences

I, mr.hotsia, have recorded my travel experience in Kalay inthe video “Kalay Myanmar Kalay 7:Kalay Sagaing Division of Burma”which clearly shows real life and the atmosphere of this city. For those who want to see images and hear sounds from the actual location, I recommend watching it.

Summary of Impressions from Kalay

Kalay is not a city that general tourists visit casually or in large numbers like Myanmar’s main tourist cities. It is a city suitable for those who want to know Myanmar from the perspective of real locals, enjoy exploring local markets, try unique local food, and experience the quiet charm of a small city that still fully preserves traditional culture.

For me, mr.hotsia, this trip to Kalay was another experience full of warmth and good memories that I want to share so everyone can truly get to know this small city in Myanmar.
