Kalay Myanmar: 12 hours on the dangerous Kalay Hakha route

When it comes to a challenging journey filled with edge-of-the-cliff thrills, I, mr.hotsia, must share my firsthand experience from the Kalay to Hakha route in Myanmar, which takes up to 12 hours on what is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the region.

Kalay is a town located in western Myanmar. Those who have followed my articles aboutKachin Statewill know that this region is full of raw natural beauty along the Irrawaddy River, as well as the lifestyles of various indigenous ethnic groups who have excellently preserved their traditional cultures.

Preparation before departure

Speaking of the Kalay-Hakha route, I, mr.hotsia, must say this road is not suitable for typical tourists who prefer convenience. Most of the route is dirt and gravel roads, with some sections requiring driving along very steep and narrow cliff edges. The route is about 200 kilometers long but takes up to 12 hours due to the need for extreme caution.

I chose to travel by a local pickup truck driven by an experienced driver. There are no gas stations or shops along the way, so preparing water and food in advance is essential. The road passes through mountains and rivers, making the air cool and pleasant, but one must be cautious of dust and mud during the rainy season.

Atmosphere and lifestyles along the way

Along the Kalay to Hakha route, I, mr.hotsia, saw small villages scattered along the hillsides. Most villagers are Kachin and other ethnic groups who still live simply—growing rice, farming, and raising animals. There are also small markets where locals sell agricultural products and handicrafts.

Interestingly, the local food differs from that of big cities. I tasted spicy curry and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, simple dishes that deliver intense flavors and are rich with local herbs. These meals helped recharge energy during the long journey.

Challenges on the dangerous route

This road has many spots requiring high driving skills. Some sections are so narrow that vehicles can barely pass each other, causing hours-long waits. Some areas have deep potholes and muddy patches that can easily trap vehicles. I, mr.hotsia, must say this route is not for the faint-hearted.

Besides the challenging nature, mobile signals are very rare, requiring careful planning and readiness to handle emergencies independently.

Hakha, a rewarding destination

Upon arriving in Hakha, a town in northern Kachin State, Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, felt like entering another world. It offers tranquility and stunning mountain scenery, along with unique local culture.

For those interested in cultural and nature tourism, I recommend Hakha as a destination to experience. Don’t forget to read my article aboutTravel information for Hakha cityto prepare before your trip
