Eating Sweet and Sour Stir-Fried Shrimp with Real Eggs in Kyaukphyu, Rakhine State, Myanmar
This trip of mine, mr.hotsia, takes you to Kyaukphyu, one of the coastal towns in Rakhine State, Myanmar, which is not crowded with foreign tourists. This town is like a hidden gem surrounded by nature and a rich coastal fishing culture. I must say that tasting the “Sweet and Sour Stir-Fried Shrimp” here is a unique experience.
Kyaukphyu is located by the vast sea of the Bay of Bengal. It is a port town with a small fishing community whose way of life is closely tied to the sea and the river flowing through the town. I traveled from Mandalay by local bus, which took several hours through rough roads and small villages. Along the way, I saw the diversity of people in Rakhine State, rarely mentioned in typical travel articles, making me feel like I was truly experiencing the real life of Burmese people from a different perspective.
Upon arriving in Kyaukphyu, I headed straight to the seaside fresh market where people bring fresh seafood to sell from early morning. Large shrimp caught from nearby seas are prepared into local signature dishes. One dish I did not miss was “Sweet and Sour Stir-Fried Shrimp,” which is completely different from what I have eaten elsewhere because here they use real eggs mixed into the sweet and sour sauce, giving it a mellow flavor and a smooth texture that cannot be found anywhere else.
The sweet and sour stir-fried shrimp in Kyaukphyu uses large fresh shrimp stir-fried with a sweet and sour sauce made from tamarind paste, palm sugar, and real fish sauce. The special touch is fresh beaten chicken eggs blended into the sauce until thick, coating every shrimp. When eating, you can taste a slight spiciness mixed with sweet and sour flavors and the aroma of local spices used by the people of Kyaukphyu. I remember the first bite felt like traveling to a flavor that is both familiar and new at the same time.
Besides sweet and sour stir-fried shrimp, other seafood dishes in Kyaukphyu are equally fresh, such as steamed fish with lime, crispy fried fish, and seafood coconut curry, all made with fresh daily seafood ingredients. I recommend visiting the seaside market in the morning because besides seeing the fishermen’s way of life, you also get to taste food made with care and cooked in the traditional style of Rakhine people.
Tasting local food in Kyaukphyu also reminded me of my travel experience in Kachin State, where I visited the source of the Irrawaddy River and tried local dishes made from fresh natural ingredients, as I shared in my article.Exploring the Source of the Irrawaddy River, Mitgina, Kachin StateSimilar
Kyaukphyu is not just an ordinary port town; it also has a fascinating mix of cultures and ethnicities. I found the people here to be kind and friendly, proud of their food and way of life. Talking with vendors at the market made me realize that seafood cooking is not just about taste but also about passing down wisdom and love for the sea surrounding them.
For travelers interested in experiencing authentic seafood flavors in Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Kyaukphyu at least once. The journey may not be as convenient as in big cities, but the value of the flavors and lifestyle here will make you feel like you have discovered a hidden treasure of the Bay of Bengal.
After enjoying seafood and sweet and sour stir-fried shrimp, I had the chance to stroll along the pier, watch the sea view, and see fishing boats delivering fresh catches daily. This simple beauty is the charm of Kyaukphyu that I want everyone to experience firsthand.
