Exploring the Original Long-neck Karen Village in Myanmar: Loikaw, Kayah State

When talking about deep travel into Myanmar, where local culture is still strongly preserved, Kayah State, which many may not be familiar with, is a destination I, mr.hotsia, want to share about. This is home to the Long-neck Karen villages, an ethnic group uniquely recognized by their brass coils wrapped around their necks creating a striking and amazing image.

Traveling to Loikaw, the main city of Kayah State, is neither easy nor as comfortable as typical tourist cities in Myanmar. I chose to travel by car from Yangon, passing winding roads and complex mountain views. Every hour on the road felt like watching a live documentary of nature and culture at the same time.

Long-neck Karen Village: A Unique Way of Life

When I arrived at this small village hidden in the valley, the first thing that caught my eye was the Long-neck Karen women just like those seen in movies or documentaries. The brass coils wrapped around their necks are not just ornaments but symbols of beauty and pride in a culture passed down for hundreds of years.

mr.hotsia walked through the local market filled with fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, as well as woven baskets and handicrafts made from natural materials. The atmosphere was warm with community spirit. Although far from modern development, this place is lively and simple in a way you can't find in big cities.

I had the chance to sit and talk with the elders, hearing stories of the tribe here—the hardships and the beauty of preserving traditional culture. Besides witnessing their lifestyle, food is another thing mr.hotsia must not miss. I tried the local spicy chicken curry and sticky rice cooked in the traditional way, so delicious I had to ask for several more servings.

Connecting to the Broader Context of Myanmar

For those interested in exploring nature and culture in this part of Myanmar, Kayah State is not far from Kachin State, which I have visited to explore the origins of the Irrawaddy River and Indawgyi Lake, a top wildlife sanctuary in the region.Kachin StateandIndawgyiare destinations that nature and culture travelers must not miss as well.

Importantly, although traveling to Kayah State and Loikaw is challenging, the richness of nature and the uniqueness of the people make every minute spent on winding roads worth the experience gained.

Travel Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia

To truly experience the atmosphere of the Long-neck Karen village, I recommend planning ahead and hiring a local guide. This not only helps understand the community’s background but also assists with communication and safe routes.

Preparing clothing and equipment is also important because the weather in this region gets quite cool at night, and some roads are still dirt tracks. mr.hotsia’s favorite socks and comfortable sneakers are essentials not to forget.

Impressions and Perspectives from mr.hotsia

Visiting Loikaw and the Long-neck Karen village opened my eyes to a world few get to experience. It is the beauty of a culture that still exists amidst changing times. The locals live simply but are full of happiness and pride in their identity.
