Step into the authentic kitchen of the original Long Neck Karen village in Myanmar, at Loikaw, Kayah State
If you ask mr.hotsia where in Myanmar still retains traditional cultural essence and remains largely untouched, I would have to say “Loikaw” in Kayah State. This is the home of the Long Neck Karen people, also known as “Padaung,” who still firmly preserve their traditional lifestyle and culture.
Traveling into the village of Loikaw is not easy, as the roads are quite rough and you must rely mainly on communicating with the locals. But for me, this is the charm that made this journey unforgettable.
Opening the door to the authentic Karen kitchen
What excited me the most was entering the true “Karen kitchen,” which is very different from the images in movies or documentaries. The kitchen here is the heart of the family and community, where food and culture are deeply intertwined.
The Karen kitchen in this village is not just about fire pits and clay pots; it is filled with local herbs, spices, and ingredients freshly gathered from the forest and mountains. This is what makes the flavors I tasted so unique and satisfying.
I had the chance to watch the entire food preparation process—from grilling river fish caught from nearby streams, pounding fresh chili and garlic with a wooden mortar, to steaming sticky rice in bamboo tubes. Everything was handmade with genuine care.
Flavors that tell the story of a way of life
The food of the Long Neck Karen in Loikaw is simple yet powerful. I tasted wild vegetable curry cooked with local herbs, spicy but balanced, and the indispensable fragrant grilled fish from the wood fire with smoky forest aroma, combined with the crispness of fresh vegetables picked from the backyard garden.
mr.hotsia saw the care in every step by the villagers, as if they were passing on love and pride through these dishes. Tasting this food was not just eating but learning about culture and a deep connection with nature.
Walking around the village and experiencing Karen life
Besides the kitchen, walking through Loikaw village showed me the real daily life of the Long Neck Karen. Most houses are made of wood with traditional thatched roofs, surrounded by large trees and cool mountain breezes.
Children played with bright smiles while adults gathered to chat and do handicrafts, such as weaving unique patterned handwoven fabrics. It was a slow but meaningful way to spend time.
mr.hotsia also spoke with elders who shared stories about the Karen tribe and the changes occurring in Kayah State, helping me understand the complexity of this area better.
Connecting with the context of Kayah State and Myanmar
Loikaw is not far from other state borders like Kachin State, where I once explored the Irrawaddy River’s source at Myitsone.Stories of Kachin StateWhere nature remains pristine and indigenous communities are also fascinating. But Kayah State, especially Loikaw, has its own unique identity with simple yet profound culture and lifestyle.
If you have read the articleIndawgyiThe large freshwater lake in Kachin State, rich in biodiversity and ethnic groups, shows that Myanmar is a land full of cultural and natural diversity. Loikaw in Kayah State is another spot I want deep travelers to experience.
Travel and preparation
Traveling to Loikaw may not be as comfortable as big cities but it is challenging and very rewarding. mr.hotsia recommends preparing your body and opening your mind to new experiences. Also, having a local guide to help navigate and translate is essential, as the Long Neck Karen language is not easily understood by most people.
Additionally, prepare suitable clothing for trekking and the cool morning-evening weather, and don’t forget drinking water and mosquito repellent, as the nature here is still intact with many small animals.
Summary of the experience
mr.hotsia closes this trip with a deeper impression than expected. Entering the kitchen of the Long Neck Karen made me feel like returning to the true roots of humanity. Whether food, lifestyle, or culture, everything is perfectly connected in the village of Loikaw.
