mr.hotsia@Yakhai 1/20: Journey to Pathein, Myanmar Backpack to Pathein Myanmar
This time mr.hotsia had the opportunity to adventure to Pathein, a port city located on the lower Irrawaddy River in Myanmar. This trip was not like a tourist booking a package tour in advance, but a backpacking style of a true traveler who wants to experience the real lifestyle and atmosphere of Myanmar from a perspective that most people rarely see.
Departing from Yakhai at dawn by a local bus fully packed with passengers, passing through changing landscapes from mountains and forests in Kachin State, which mr.hotsia has previously described in an article.Kachin StateWhere the Irrawaddy River originates from the confluence of the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers, becoming the main river of Myanmar stretching over 2,000 kilometers.
Along the way through Kachin State, I caught a glimpse of Indawgyi Lake, which I have visited and written about in an article.IndawgyiOne of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, its tranquility and natural abundance remain endlessly captivating.
Upon arriving in Pathein, the first thing mr.hotsia must say is the unique vibrancy of the market along the Irrawaddy River here. The riverside market in Pathein is full of colorful stalls selling fresh and dried goods and local foods that are hard to find in other cities. I strolled through local foods such as dried fish caught from the Irrawaddy River, the famous Hilsa Tenualosa fish of this region, and even fresh seasonal fruits every day.
The market atmosphere is filled with chatter and the aroma of herbs and spices. I tried street food recommended by locals like fish curry and freshly made Burmese desserts every morning, which energized me for the journey to the next destination.
Pathein is a port city with economic and cultural importance in southern Myanmar. Traveling by ferry to the opposite bank of the Irrawaddy River gave me a chance to see the lifestyle of riverside villagers, including fishing, goods transportation, and traditional fishing methods, which are clearly different from big cities like Yangon or Mandalay.
For those who love culture and history, don't miss visiting the ancient temples in Pathein that remain beautiful and peaceful. These temples reflect delicate and unique Burmese Buddhist art. There are also friendly monks welcoming tourists warmly for conversations.
mr.hotsia also experienced Pathein’s street food, which offers flavors and variety comparable to larger cities, especially dried fish and seafood dishes made from fresh ingredients from the Irrawaddy River and the Andaman Sea, which differ from the food in Bagan or Pagan that I have written about before.Food in Bagan, Pagan, MyanmarWhich focuses more on Indian-style curry and roti.
mr.hotsia’s journey in Pathein did not stop in the city but also included a boat trip to fishing villages along the river that still preserve traditional lifestyles, including ancient fishing methods, fresh seafood handling, and a simple life harmoniously blended with nature.
From my real experience, mr.hotsia wants to say that visiting Pathein is not just about sightseeing or taking beautiful photos, but about immersing yourself in the unembellished life of Burmese people, seeing the reality of a vibrant port city full of life and diverse culture. If you are looking for a journey that is both fun and meaningful, Pathein is the answer that mr.hotsia invites you to experience yourself.
