mr.hotsia@Myeik 5/20: Myeik Net Fishing Expert KWA Myanmar

Myeik, a coastal city in Myanmar, is another destination where I, mr.hotsia, chose to go on-site to experience the local lifestyle and the lively local fish market. This place is not just an ordinary seaside town but a prime fishing ground where locals expertly use nets to catch fish like professionals, earning the nickname “Myeik Net Fishing Expert.” Because of this, I want to invite everyone to get to know Myeik through the eyes of someone who has truly been there—feeling the scent of fishing nets in the air and hearing the fishing boats return to shore at dawn.

My trip to Myeik was full of excitement because this city is not yet popular among tourists, keeping its atmosphere simple and authentic. The locals still live traditionally, especially the fishermen who set out at dawn to drag their nets in the abundant Andaman Sea. I had the chance to ride a boat with the locals out to sea and witness net-dragging techniques honed over more than a century. The fishermen’s teamwork here is not just about catching fish but also about deeply preserving and respecting nature.

The fish market in Myeik is another spot I didn’t miss visiting. The evolution of this fish market serves as the heart of the community’s life. You will see fresh fish pulled from the sea laid out on stalls, including various rare sea fish not found elsewhere. The time I visited was peak season for fish abundance. The chatter of vendors mixed with the salty sea breeze creates an atmosphere hard to find anywhere else.

Myeik is not just about the sea and the market but also a gateway to the cultural diversity of Kachin State, which is not far from here. For those interested in deep natural and cultural journeys, I recommend stopping by.Kachin StateBecause there lies the source of the mighty Irrawaddy River and it is home to various unique ethnic tribes.

Also, if you love nature and birdwatching, I suggest visitingIndawgyi Lake(Indawgyi Lake), located in Kachin State as well. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia and an important wildlife sanctuary. Many rare bird species can be seen here. The lake’s surroundings are peaceful and full of pristine natural beauty.

After experiencing the sea and culture in Myeik, I also had the chance to taste fresh seafood prepared simply by locals but with outstanding flavors, such as fish curry made with fish from Myeik’s sea mixed with local spices, or crispy fried fish served with hot steamed rice. These dishes truly convey the richness of coastal cuisine.

I want to share another point about traveling in and around Myeik. Although this place lacks a comprehensive public transport system like big cities, taking boats or walking through local markets helps you fully absorb the real life of the people here. I, mr.hotsia, recommend bringing your camera and an adventurous spirit because every corner of Myeik has stories and colors waiting to be discovered.

Finally, if you want to experience the atmosphere and watch the video clips I filmed in Myeik, showing clear net fishing here, please watchmr.hotsia@Myeik 5/20: Myeik Net Fishing Expert KWA MyanmarI guarantee you will see a unique side of authentic Myanmar coastal life.

For anyone interested in diverse travel routes in Myanmar, including nature, culture, and community lifestyles, I, mr.hotsia, recommend exploring nearby areas such asIrrawaddy Riverside Market in PatheinOr if you want to visit a slightly bigger city, there isHakhawhich offers mountain scenery and unique culture. Even in less talked-about places likestreet food in Yeong cityis another interesting angle.

For me, Myeik is not just a small port town but a gateway to a new world of Myanmar that many have never seen. I hope my experience as mr.hotsia inspires you to travel and discover the true charm of Myeik beyond what typical travel books show.
