mr.hotsia@Myeik 6/20: KWA Morning Market, Myeik Myanmar
Whenever I talk about morning markets in Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, always picture a bustling atmosphere filled with the aroma of food and the cheerful chatter of people. The KWA Market in Myeik is no different.
Myeik is a small town located in Kachin State (though the province is not clearly specified). The lively morning market here made me feel like I was experiencing the authentic lifestyle of the Burmese people firsthand, as I strolled past fresh produce, dried goods, fruits, and local foods lined up along both sides of the street.
KWA Market was the starting point of my eye-opening morning in Myeik. I walked past fresh vegetable stalls and bumped into locals selecting items such as mustard greens, climbing ferns, and rare local herbs that are hard to find elsewhere. The fresh scent of vegetables and herbs blended with the aroma of spices from curry shops just lighting their stoves.
What I liked most was the variety of food here — hot sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves with rich Burmese curry, and unique local snacks that are easy to find but unlike any other. I tried the perfectly sweet and creamy sticky rice dessert and crispy yet soft roti sold at almost every stall. This atmosphere reminded me of the morning markets inBagan, Baganwhich I have visited before.
This market is not as large as those in bigger cities but has a unique charm that clearly tells the story of the community. I, mr.hotsia, watched people shopping — housewives carrying cloth bags, vendors carrying fresh goods, and children playing freely — a scene that conveyed the simplicity and warmth of Burmese life.
Besides fresh food and snacks, KWA Market also has small shops selling handwoven fabrics and jewelry from the Red Tai and Kachin ethnic groups who live in Kachin State. Seeing these handicrafts helped me better understand the culture and local pride of the people here.
For traveling to Myeik, I recommend preparing for the cool and humid early morning weather. Traveling by car or bus from nearby towns may take several hours, but once there, visiting this morning market is well worth it. If you are interested in a deep experience of Burmese life, KWA Market is a place you should not miss.
If you enjoy nature travel and want to learn about the Irrawaddy River's source, which is important to Myanmar, don't forget to read about my journey atKachin Statewhich is not far from Myeik. It is the origin of the Irrawaddy River that flows throughout Myanmar.
Besides the morning market, Myeik is also a good connection point for travelers wanting to explore Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, home to the Red Tai and Kachin people. You can read my in-depth travel experience atIndawgyiwhich I have documented thoroughly.
The morning market in Myeik offers more than just food. I also saw small shops selling agricultural tools and household necessities that make villagers' lives easier. Around the market, there are Burmese tea shops where you can taste strong, fragrant tea while enjoying the lively local conversations and news exchange.
KWA Market is one of the morning markets I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend for those who want to experience the genuine life of Burmese people without embellishment. It is like a small window to see the beauty of rural culture and lifestyle.
