mr.hotsia@Yahkhei 8/20: Giant KWA Fish, KWA Town, Yahkhei, Myanmar

Hello friends and fellow travelers, this is mr.hotsia with fresh, hot experiences from Yahkhei, Myanmar. Yahkhei is a small town that many may not be familiar with, but for me, it is a little corner full of charm and stories of the local way of life. Here, I encountered the “Giant KWA Fish,” a massive fish that represents the nature and river culture of this area.

Yahkhei is located in an area not often talked about, but if anyone has read my articlesKachin Stateyou will get an overview of the Irrawaddy River flowing through this region, Myanmar’s main river that starts from the headwaters in Kachin State before flowing down to lowlands and connecting the lifestyles of people in various areas, including Yahkhei.

Traveling to Yahkhei with mr.hotsia

Reaching Yahkhei is not easy because it remains very raw and natural. Most travel is by car or motorcycle along rural roads, some of which are gravel and very dusty. But I like this because it makes me feel like I’m truly experiencing the real life of the locals here. Along the way, there are many small villages where I stopped to rest, drink tea, and chat with locals—an experience you can’t find in big cities.

Giant KWA Fish and the Fishing Way of KWA Town

Upon arriving in Yahkhei, my intended destination was “KWA Town,” a small riverside community where fishing is the main occupation. The ‘Giant KWA Fish’ or large fish caught here is considered a local specialty. I had the chance to ride a small boat out into the river with local fishermen to experience traditional fishing firsthand.

Boating on the river early in the morning with light mist drifting quietly, the peaceful atmosphere and clear water allowed me to see fish swimming below. Sometimes locals would show me large fish caught with nets called “Giant KWA Fish.” These fish are many times larger than usual and are a source of pride for the people here because they indicate the river’s abundance and well-preserved natural environment.

Local Lifestyle and Food in Yahkhei

After returning from the boat trip, mr.hotsia tasted local dishes prepared by the villagers, focusing on fresh natural ingredients such as fresh river fish, local vegetables, and fragrant spices. The food here is not as spicy as in big Myanmar cities but has a mild and simple flavor that is impressive.

Although Yahkhei is not a major tourist town, the fresh market by the river is lively. You will see people exchanging local goods, fresh fish, vegetables, and handmade souvenirs. I recommend taking a walk through the morning market to experience the authentic lifestyle of Yahkhei’s people.

Connections to Other Places in Myanmar

If you enjoy exploring nature and want to experience Myanmar’s cultural diversity, I suggest planning to continue your journey toIndawgyi Lakein Kachin State, which is not far away. Indawgyi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, with high biodiversity and home to many rare wildlife species.

Also, there isKachin Statewhich is the source of the Irrawaddy River. I have written about it in previous articles. It remains a place of well-preserved nature and diverse indigenous cultures, ideal for those who love adventure and deep cultural learning.
