Mrauk U Knives at Mrauk U, Rakhine State, Myanmar: The Charm of a Forgotten Ancient Kingdom
The first time I, mr.hotsia, traveled to Mrauk U in Rakhine State, Myanmar, I felt as if I had unexpectedly stepped back into ancient times. This is not a tourist city widely known like Bagan or Mandalay, but Mrauk U holds a profound charm waiting for travel lovers like me to experience and learn.
Mrauk U is the ancient city of the Rakhine Kingdom that flourished from the 15th to 18th centuries. Today, ruins of pagodas and ancient temples are scattered throughout the city. The atmosphere here is peaceful and full of mystery, as if every brick still holds stories of the past that refuse to fade away.
Travel and Lifestyle in Mrauk U
Reaching Mrauk U is not easy. For me, mr.hotsia, traveling from Sittwe, I chose a local bus which was quite challenging and long, but it was a great opportunity to deeply see the lifestyle of the Rakhine people. Along the way, fields and mountains covered with morning mist filled the view. Passing through small communities revealed the simplicity and warmth of the locals.
Upon arriving in town, I rented a bicycle to ride around without the noise of cars. It truly felt like stepping back in time. Cycling past hundreds of ancient pagoda ruins reminded me of the once prosperous and abundant kingdom of the past.
Food and Local Markets
Mrauk U is not only interesting for its ancient ruins but also for its food, which is another charm I, mr.hotsia, must share. I enjoyed walking through the local morning market where there are many food stalls offering local Rakhine dishes such as sea fish curry and hot sticky rice served with traditional chili paste. The fish used is caught from the nearby sea close to Kyaukpyu, which I have detailed inmr.hotsia@Sittwe 15/20in detail.
Besides fresh seafood, there are simple local sweets made from coconut and peanuts with very mellow flavors. I often stopped at small roadside shops to drink green tea and taste these local treats before setting off each day.
Experience Culture and History in Mrauk U
One of the most impressive experiences was talking with locals who still use the language and firmly preserve traditional customs. Some monks at certain temples still wear ancient robes and sincerely teach the Dhamma to children in the community.
I also learned that Rakhine State is connected to Kachin State, which I have visited before (read more atKachin State), the source region of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s main river. Traveling between these two areas reveals the unique ethnic and geographical diversity of Myanmar.
Must-See Attractions
If you love history and ancient sites, Mrauk U has many old pagodas and temples ready for you to explore, such as Shwetaung Temple with its ancient murals, or the ruins of the old palace still partially standing.
There is also the opportunity to take a boat ride on the river near town to enjoy nature and observe the lifestyle of local fishermen. This was a memorable experience for me, mr.hotsia, as it showed a perfect blend of real life and nature.
Tips from mr.hotsia for Traveling in Mrauk U
1. Prepare your travel plans in advance as buses and public vehicles are not very convenient, but if you enjoy adventure, it will be a memorable experience.
2. Rent a bicycle or motorcycle for flexibility in exploring the town and ancient sites.
3. Don’t forget to try local food at the morning market to truly taste Rakhine flavors.
4. Bring your camera and extra batteries because the pagoda views and nature are very beautiful.
5. Carry a face mask as some areas in town can be quite dusty, as I previously recommended inHorse Cart Ride in Bagan, Pugam
