Face Tattoo Village Mrauk U (Mrauk U), Rakhine State, Myanmar

When mr.hotsia had the chance to travel into the remote border area of Myanmar calledMrauk Uor Mrauk U in Rakhine State, the first feeling was like stepping back in time to the past that still retains the charm and traditional way of life of the community. The people here call themselves the “Face Tattoo Village,” who firmly preserve their unique culture and rural lifestyle.

Mrauk U is located in an area without clearly defined provinces for tourism purposes but is an important city full of history in Rakhine State. It was once the center of a prosperous ancient kingdom. Although it is not as popular with tourists as Bagan, Mrauk U has a unique charm that mr.hotsia could not find anywhere else.

Journey to Mrauk U

Traveling to the Face Tattoo Village in Mrauk U is not as easy as going to major tourist cities. mr.hotsia chose to travel by bus from Sittwe, which takes about 6-7 hours through challenging roads surrounded by rich nature. This route allowed me to see the simple and warm lifestyle of villagers along the way. At times, I could stop at small villages to experience the rural atmosphere up close.

Lifestyle and Culture of the Face Tattoo People

Here, most women have unique facial tattoos, a distinctive feature of the local ethnic group that has been passed down for generations. The facial tattoos are not just decoration but carry symbolic meaning and cultural beliefs. I visited local families who still preserve the traditional hand and needle tattooing method, an intricate art requiring great patience.

The people here mainly live by agriculture. They grow rice, raise fish in the river, and do traditional handicrafts. I tried simple local dishes full of flavor, such as hot sticky rice with fresh river fish curry. The food reflects their close connection to nature and the important Irrawaddy River flowing through the region.

Experience the History of Mrauk U

Mrauk U is an ancient city with ruins of pagodas and old temples scattered throughout, similar to Bagan but quieter and less commercialized for tourism. I strolled among pagodas covered by forest and pristine nature. Some pagodas still have murals and architecture that tell fascinating stories of the past.

The atmosphere around Mrauk U reminded me of when I visitedKachin Statewhich is another area rich in nature and diverse tribal cultures. Visiting Mrauk U feels like completing a deeper and more authentic Myanmar travel experience.

Local Markets and Cuisine

One of mr.hotsia’s impressions was walking through the local market in the Face Tattoo Village. The market is not large like those in big cities but full of life with villagers selling produce from their gardens and rivers. Fresh vegetables, fish, dried fish, and various spices that I had rarely seen before.

The food I tried in Mrauk U was authentic local cuisine made from fresh natural ingredients, such as river fish curry seasoned with local herbs or sticky rice with spicy chili paste that was so flavorful I had to ask for seconds. The market’s lively chatter, laughter, and aroma made me feel like I was eating at a friend’s home.

Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia

Traveling and staying in Mrauk U requires good preparation because facilities are not as complete as in major tourist cities, and English communication may not be widespread. But if you enjoy adventure and truly experiencing local life, this is the place.

Don’t forget to bring a face mask because some roads can be dusty, as I experienced inBaganTravel during the winter or dry season for easier transportation and exploration.

For those interested in nature and nearby wildlife, I recommend continuing toIndawgyi Lakein Kachin State, which is rich in biodiversity and rare birds, enhancing the memories you gain from Mrauk U.
