Face Tattoo Village in Mrauk U, a mysterious town in Rakhine State, Myanmar
When talking about Myanmar, many may be familiar with Bagan, Yangon, or Kachin State, which I have previously shared about inKachin StateI, mr.hotsia, would like to take you to experience a new journey to a small town called “Mrauk U” in Rakhine State, which has a unique charm not found elsewhere. This town is like a hidden treasure of ancient history and culture, still carrying the mysterious aura and beauty of a once flourishing ancient kingdom.
One of the things that impressed me more than anywhere else is the “Face Tattoo Village” located not far from Mrauk U. This village is a community that firmly preserves the traditional lifestyle of the Chin ethnic group in Myanmar, especially the face tattoo tradition, which has been passed down through generations and is a very distinctive cultural identity.
Journey to the Face Tattoo Village: Untouched Beauty
Traveling from the main town of Mrauk U to the Face Tattoo Village, I, mr.hotsia, chose to use local transportation and a bit of walking to truly experience the local atmosphere. The route passes through lush green rice fields and small villages lining the way, making me feel like I was stepping back in time.
This village is unlike typical commercial tourist spots because here, the women still genuinely tattoo their faces with meaningful patterns hidden in each line. Face tattooing is not just body decoration but a deep reflection of their identity and way of life. I saw women in brightly colored traditional costumes and warm smiles welcoming guests without much formality.
Admired Culture and Lifestyle
Besides face tattooing, the lifestyle of the villagers is closely connected to nature and simplicity. I had the opportunity to sit and talk with locals, hearing stories about beliefs, traditions, and daily life that, while simple, are full of beauty and meaning.
I, mr.hotsia, also experienced local cuisine made from fresh natural ingredients, such as Hilsa fish, an important regional fish carefully prepared. The food here has a unique flavor, not too spicy but rich and fresh.
Mrauk U and Its Diverse History
Besides the Face Tattoo Village, Mrauk U is filled with ancient ruins and old pagodas. These ruins testify to the past glory of the Mrauk U kingdom, which was once an important trading center in ancient Myanmar.
I, mr.hotsia, walked around temples and pagodas featuring architecture that perfectly blends Burmese Buddhist art with Chin art. This is a sight not found in other cities I have visited. This place is ideal for travelers who enjoy peace, mystery, and want to deeply explore historical stories.
Connecting to Travels in Other Myanmar States
