Fishing the Irrawaddy River at Hinthada, Mrauk U, Rakhine State, Myanmar

When talking about Myanmar beyond Bagan or Yangon, many may not be familiar with the nameMrauk UAncient city inRakhine Statethat hides unique beauty and riverside lifestyle along the Irrawaddy River. For me,mr.hotsiathis journey to seek real experiences was to fish in the Irrawaddy River at Hinthada, a place where locals still live truly in harmony with nature.

Mrauk U, an ancient city filled with ruins of old temples and endless river views, is an irresistible charm for adventurous travelers like me. Getting here is not easy, as the road is mostly dirt and local taxis are limited, but every kilometer traveled offers a genuine glimpse into the life of the Rakhine people.

Local Life and the Irrawaddy River

The Irrawaddy River, locally called "Ayeyarwady," is Myanmar’s main artery flowing from the northernmost part of the country down to the Andaman Sea. I have previously written aboutthe origin of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State. Here in Rakhine, this river still sustains the fishing communities along its banks.

On the day I arrived at Hinthada, the gentle sound of flowing water mixed with villagers’ conversations created a warm atmosphere, contrasting with the quiet of nearby ancient temples. Locals were preparing traditional fishing gear such as nets, traps, and bamboo hooks, showing a deep connection with nature.

Most of the fish caught are various freshwater species, including the famous Hilsa fish, popular in the Bay of Bengal region and Myanmar. I had previously watched clips and studied Hilsa fishing methods from Bangladesh inDeep Dive Bangladesh EP 52 video.Already available.

Fish Market and Local Food in Mrauk U

After joining the villagers for morning fishing, I had the chance to visit the riverside fish market in Mrauk U town. This market gathers fresh fish just caught from the Irrawaddy River. The market atmosphere was filled with the scent of fish and lively bargaining between vendors and buyers.

I tasted fresh fish prepared as local dishes like spicy fish curry and also tried salt-grilled fish with a mild flavor combined with local spices made from natural ingredients around Rakhine State. The food here is unlike anywhere else in Myanmar. For those interested in deep culinary and cultural experiences, I recommend reading my articleCooking Local Rakhine (Rakhine) Cuisineas well.

Travel and Experiences from mr.hotsia

Traveling to Mrauk U can be challenging but it has its own charm. I spent about 4-5 hours by car from Sittwe on unpaved roads, but the journey was filled with mountain views and lush green fields that often made me stop for photos.

Accommodation in Mrauk U is limited, mostly small guesthouses with friendly owners and warm service. I enjoyed morning walks along the Irrawaddy River here, waking up to light mist and the sound of local boats paddling by, making me feel like I traveled back in time.

Connecting with Tourism in Myanmar

If you love adventure and want to see the authentic Myanmar that is not overly commercialized, Mrauk U is a destination you should not miss. You can also connect this trip with visits toKachin Stateto see the Irrawaddy River’s source or stop by Indawgyi Lake inKachin Statewhich I have had the opportunity to visit. All of this will give you a deeper and different perspective of Myanmar.

For me,mr.hotsiatrying to fish with simple tools at Hinthada was like fully experiencing the true lifestyle of the Burmese people. It was not just superficial tourism but a learning and understanding of a culture that lives harmoniously with nature.
