A Million Bamboo Grooves from the Deep Forest of Mrauk U, Mrauk U Township, Rakhine State, Myanmar
When talking about Myanmar, many people probably think of Bagan and Pagan, filled with ancient pagodas. But for mr.hotsia, this trip toMrauk Uin Rakhine State is an exciting new chapter. This place feels like a treasure hidden deep in the forest, with “a million bamboo trees” stretching from the lush green forest as far as the eye can see, along with stories and local lifestyles I have rarely seen anywhere else.
Mrauk U is an ancient city located in Rakhine State, western Myanmar, with a long history and once a prosperous royal capital. Remnants of pagodas and ancient temples are scattered throughout the area. But what impressed me more was the natural surroundings around the city. Here, you can experience tall, dense bamboo that forms a multi-layered forest, small streams flowing through, and an open sky letting sunlight create a warm atmosphere that is rare these days.
Traveling to Mrauk U is not easy. I had to start from Nyaung-U, the gateway to Bagan and Pagan, then take a flight to Rakhine Airport, followed by several hours by car to reach Mrauk U. This route took me through rice fields and Burmese villages where people still live simply. The locals are friendly and always smiling, warmly sharing their folk stories.
Lifestyle and Culture in Mrauk U
Mrauk U is not only about beautiful nature but also home to a unique local community. Most villagers still live traditionally, farming gardens and growing rice to support their families. What excited me was seeing the local market filled with fresh produce and local foods, whether fresh tilapia from the river or seasonal fruits. Here, you get a chance to taste authentic Burmese food, such as hot sticky rice dipped in chili paste made from fresh chilies and garlic, with a bold flavor that reminded me of street food inYangonwhere I have been before.
When I visited Mrauk U, the weather was pleasantly cool, perfect for exploring ancient pagodas and temples scattered around the city. I walked along clay paths surrounded by tall bamboo, passing small villages where children played in the fields, then stopped to sip hot green tea at a small local shop. The peaceful feeling and closeness to nature here reminded me ofKachin Statewhere I also experienced the source of the Irrawaddy River.
A Million Bamboo Trees: Enchanting Traces of Nature
What impressed me most in Mrauk U was the “million bamboo trees” casting shadows everywhere. These are not ordinary bamboo but bamboo groves emerging from the deep forest, creating a grand and lively natural landscape. Whenever the wind blows, you see bamboo leaves fluttering like green ocean waves. I strolled under the bamboo shade, hearing birdsong harmonizing with flowing water—a truly profound and pure atmosphere.
Besides the natural beauty, Mrauk U is also a treasure trove of ancient temples waiting to be explored. For photography lovers or history enthusiasts, the atmosphere here feels like stepping back in time to when the Rakhine dynasty ruled this land. Square and round pagodas stand tall among bamboo and various trees—a sight I highly recommend everyone experience firsthand.
Travel and Accommodation Recommendations
If you want to try a trip like mine, I recommend preparing to travel from Nyaung-U. There are domestic flights from there to Rakhine Airport, then about 3-4 hours by car to reach Mrauk U. The route is somewhat rugged but very rewarding with views of bamboo and lush forests on both sides.
For accommodation in Mrauk U, there are small hotels and guesthouses to choose from, mostly simple and suitable for those who want to experience the local atmosphere. mr.hotsia stayed at a guesthouse owned by locals, with a warm, homely atmosphere and local breakfast to try, such as sticky rice with grilled fish and freshly made chili paste every day.

Closing Words from mr.hotsia
This trip to Mrauk U in Rakhine State was another experience I want to share. The beauty of a million bamboo trees and the depth of local culture preserved so well made me think of a rare peace in this era. If you love nature that is still mostly untouched, with the sound of bamboo leaves rustling rhythmically, I encourage you to visit here at least once.
