Mrauk U, Yakhai Myanmar: The mysterious city of Chin State still largely undiscovered
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today I will take you to Mrauk U, Yakhai (Mrauk U), an ancient city in Chin State, Myanmar. Many may not be familiar with it, but for me, Mrauk U is one of the destinations full of charm and deep historical stories, as well as a fascinating indigenous lifestyle.
Traveling to Mrauk U is not easy. I chose to fly from Yangon to Yakhai Airport, then took a car for about an hour to reach the city center. Traveling in Myanmar at this time requires preparation for road conditions and public services that may not be as convenient as in other countries. But everything I encountered in Mrauk U was definitely worth the effort.
History and Beauty of Mrauk U Pagodas
Mrauk U was once the ancient capital of the Yakhai Kingdom from the 15th to 18th centuries, a golden era of wealth and Burmese art and culture distinct from other cities. The sandstone pagodas and ancient temples scattered throughout the city reflect religious prosperity and outstanding artistry with unique architectural styles. Seeing them with my own eyes felt like stepping into the past.
Climbing the tall pagodas in this city gave me views of the city and the lush green fields stretching as far as the eye can see. The early morning air was cool and pleasant, perfect for walking and capturing beautiful scenic photos.
Lifestyle of Mrauk U People and the Tattooed Face Community
One of the interesting aspects of Mrauk U is the tattooed face community, known as the “Chin people,” who still preserve the unique tradition of facial tattooing. I had the chance to visit a tattooed face village, witnessed the delicate tattooing process, and spoke with villagers proud of this culture. Although this tradition is gradually fading over time, it remains a clear reflection of the Chin people's heritage.
The village atmosphere was quite peaceful, with a small market selling local products such as handwoven fabrics, local food, and beverages made from natural ingredients. I tried the local food here; the flavors were rich and special, especially fresh sea fish from nearby waters prepared in the Chin style.
Travel Connections to Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake
When talking about tourism in Myanmar connected to Mrauk U, I recommend visitingKachin Statewhich is not far away. There you can experience the abundant nature such as the Irrawaddy River's source originating from this area, and learn about the distinct lifestyle of the Kachin people.
Or if you love nature and rare wild birds, don't miss Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. It is a wildlife sanctuary with a variety of bird species to enjoy. Read more details atIndawgyi.
Food and Dining in Mrauk U and Myanmar That Impressed Me
In Mrauk U, most food is Burmese style combined with locally available ingredients. I remember a small roadside restaurant in the city serving fish curry and chicken curry with very balanced flavors, along with sticky rice and fresh seasonal side dishes. I recommend trying the grilled river fish here; it has a rich and truly fresh taste.
If you have read my article aboutFood and Dining in Bagan, Myanmar, you will see that Burmese food is diverse and delicious. Mrauk U shares similarities in freshness and flavors close to northern Burmese local cuisine. Some dishes may not be found in major tourist cities, but here is a great opportunity to taste authentic local food from the heart of the villagers.
Travel Tips and Preparation from mr.hotsia
For traveling in Mrauk U and surrounding areas, I recommend preparing appropriate clothing and walking shoes because some spots require climbing stairs or traveling on dirt roads. Also, always carry a face mask and drinking water, and have enough cash on hand as credit cards or card readers are rarely accepted here.
If you want to experience the atmosphere of an old Burmese city truly different from others, Mrauk U, Yakhai is the answer that mr.hotsia wholeheartedly recommends. And if you plan to continue traveling to Kachin State, don't forget to visitKachin Stateand the lakeIndawgyito get a more diverse and profound overview of Myanmar.
Finally, I would like to share a video I filmed in Mrauk U for you to see the real atmosphere and interesting lifestyle of the Chin tattooed face villagers.
