Tinsaou: The Land of Burmese Girls by Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State

When talking about Myanmar, cities that many often think of include Bagan, Yangon, or Mandalay. But for mr.hotsia, traveling toTinsaoubecame an equally profound and memorable experience. Tinsaou is a small village located byIndawgyi Lakethe largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located in Kachin State, Myanmar. This place offers a new dimension of tourism as it preserves the richness of nature and the authentic lifestyle of the Red Tai or Shan people.

Traveling to Tinsaou is not easy. From the main city of Kachin State, Myitkyina, I rented a motorcycle and rode through dirt roads and mountain paths to reach Indawgyi Lake, which took over an hour. Along the way, there are small villages of Burmese and Shan tribes where you can stop to rest. If you are fascinated by the Irrawaddy River atmosphere and want to learn about its source, you can read more atThe Origin of the Irrawaddy River, Kachin Statewhich I have previously written about.

Lifestyle and Culture of Burmese Girls in Tinsaou

One thing that impressed me greatly was seeing the Burmese girls here, also known as #BurmeseGirls #RedTaiGirls or #ShanGirls. Each has a distinctive charm, from their beautiful attire to their warm smiles. They live simply and are deeply connected to Indawgyi Lake. Most girls help their families with agriculture and unique local handicrafts, such as cotton weaving and handloom textiles, which are rare charms in today's fast-paced world.

I had the chance to take a boat with locals to explore the lake in the early morning. A light mist hovered over the water’s surface. The tranquility and natural beauty here made me feel as if I had entered another world. Various bird species fly freely, especially rare birds protected in this wildlife sanctuary.Indawgyi Lakewhich is recognized as one of Myanmar’s wildlife sanctuaries.

Authentic Red Tai and Shan Cuisine

After boating on the lake, I returned to the village to taste local dishes that many say should not be missed when visiting Tinsaou. These are the foods of the Red Tai and Shan people here, especially “Gaeng Khae,” a spicy curry cooked with pork or chicken and local vegetables, and “Sticky Rice with Fried Pork,” crispy outside and tender inside. As someone who enjoys spicy food, I couldn’t resist trying and loving it. There is also Khao Ram Fuen, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, sold at small markets by the lake.

For those who like sweets, I recommend trying “Khanom Thuay Fu,” a traditional Shan dessert made from rice flour mixed with coconut milk. It is slightly sweet with a mellow flavor, perfect for sipping hot tea amidst the natural atmosphere and cool breeze.

Impressions from mr.hotsia

On the day I traveled to Tinsaou, I spoke with many locals. Everyone was friendly and warmly welcomed tourists. Although language was sometimes a barrier, body language and smiles made everything smooth. Visiting this place allowed me to see the untouched natural beauty and the simple, warm lifestyle of the Burmese people.

For those who want to experience deep and unhurried travel, Tinsaou and Indawgyi Lake inKachin Stateare options not to be missed. I recommend preparing for the mountainous journey, which is still quite challenging, but the atmosphere and experiences will surely be rewarding.
