Tinsaou, the land of Burmese girls by Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State

When talking about Myanmar, many might think of Bagan, golden pagodas, or the Irrawaddy River. But for those who love deep travel and want to truly experience the local way of life,Tinsaouis the destination I, mr.hotsia, sincerely want to introduce. This land is located inKachin Statein northern Myanmar, adjacent to Indawgyi Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.

Reaching Tinsaou is not as easy as going to popular tourist cities because I myself had to travel through mountainous routes and small villages of the Tai Daeng and Shan people. This area is a melting pot of ethnic groups with unique and fascinating cultures. Most locals still live simply, farming, cultivating, and fishing from the vast Indawgyi Lake that stretches as far as the eye can see.

The lifestyle of Burmese girls in Tinsaou

In the village of Tinsaou, I had the chance to talk with local Burmese girls, mostly Tai Daeng and Shan. They wear brightly colored traditional costumes and are incredibly friendly. You will see smiles and warm welcomes every time you pass by. The small village market is full of fresh vegetables, fruits, and handmade items such as shell jewelry and handwoven fabrics, which are distinctive to the Shan people here.

Tinsaou is a place where I, mr.hotsia, witnessed the harmony of nature and humanity living together. The morning bird songs and the breeze over the lake create a truly peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. It is no surprise that Indawgyi Lake was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 due to its incredible biodiversity.

Indawgyi Lake, the source of life

Indawgyi Lake is about 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake, nearly 20 villages depend on its water for their livelihood, including fishing, agriculture, and aquaculture. I, mr.hotsia, rented a small boat from a guesthouse in the village to paddle around the lake and saw many bird species flying above the water. Especially in winter, you can spot rare birds such as Greylag geese and the lesser whistling duck.

Besides the natural beauty, there are also interesting historical and cultural stories of the Tai Daeng and Shan people. I recommend walking around the village and talking with the community to learn about their lifestyle and perspectives different from big cities.

Routes and travel to Tinsaou

For travelers wanting to visit Tinsaou, I, mr.hotsia, suggest starting from Mandalay or Myitkyina, then taking a bus or renting a motorcycle to head north into Kachin State. The winding mountain roads require caution, but the stunning nature along the way and the friendliness of the locals make every minute of the journey worthwhile.

Additionally, if interested in the origin of the Irrawaddy River near Kachin State, I have written about it in the article"Exploring the Source of the Irrawaddy River, Myitkyina"which will help deepen your understanding and perspective of this region.

Local food and culture

Speaking of food in Tinsaou, most dishes are local home-style meals made from fresh local ingredients such as river fish, native vegetables, and sticky rice, which are staples for the Tai Daeng and Shan people. I, mr.hotsia, especially enjoy the spicy fish curry at small lakeside eateries. The rich and balanced flavors make me ask for several extra plates of steamed rice.

There is also a small market selling fresh produce and handmade goods from villagers. It’s a great opportunity to buy souvenirs that reflect the community’s uniqueness, such as beautifully patterned handwoven fabrics or natural material jewelry.

Why visit Tinsaou?

Tinsaou is not a well-known or easy-to-reach tourist destination, but it is a place I, mr.hotsia, want travel lovers to experience. It has a unique charm with pristine nature, warm local lifestyles, and diverse Burmese cultures that are often overlooked by mainstream tourists.

If you enjoy traveling with learning, experiencing the real life of locals, and want to escape the hustle of big cities, Tinsaou and Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State are the answers I want you to open your heart and experience yourself.
