Tinsaou: Experience the lifestyle of Burmese girls by Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State

My journey this time takes me to “Tinsaou,” a small village by Indawgyi Lake, located in Kachin State, Myanmar. This land is full of natural abundance and the simple lifestyle of the Burmese people, especially the Shan ethnic group, also known as the “Red Tai.” This is one of the places where I, mr.hotsia, truly feel the unique beauty of Myanmar unlike anywhere else.

Indawgyi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, measuring over 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake are more than 20 small villages where most locals live by traditional farming and fishing. The area is surrounded by pristine nature, including mountains, forests, and rare wildlife protected within the Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Tinsaou

When I arrived at Tinsaou, the first thing I felt was the peace and simplicity of the village. Most of the locals here are Burmese girls dressed in colorful traditional attire, with warm smiles. They represent the Shan or Red Tai culture, which is unique. I had the opportunity to talk with these Burmese girls, learning about their daily lives, traditions, and work closely connected to the lake and surrounding nature.

Here, villagers still use traditional fishing methods, such as wooden paddle boats and ancient fishing gear. Cruising the lake in the early morning mist was an experience that deeply impressed me, mr.hotsia. Not only did I witness authentic lifestyles, but I also saw various bird species flying freely, especially in January when many birds like Greylag geese and bar-headed geese come to reside here. These scenes tell the story of the richness and abundance of nature still preserved here.

Traveling to Tinsaou and Indawgyi Lake

For travelers wanting to experience this atmosphere, I recommend starting from Myitkyina city inKachin Statewhich is a nearby important city and also the source of the famous Irrawaddy River. The journey from Myitkyina to Tinsaou can take some time due to rough roads, but once you arrive, all fatigue disappears immediately.

I, mr.hotsia, chose to rent a motorcycle from a hotel in Myitkyina to freely stop and explore villages along the way. Riding a motorcycle in Kachin State requires caution and always wearing a helmet because some roads are still quite rough. However, this challenge allowed me to see genuine local scenes, including farmers working in the fields and small roadside markets full of local products.

Food and Culture by the Lake

Tinsaou and the villages around Indawgyi Lake offer very interesting local cuisine, especially the Red Tai dishes that use fresh ingredients from the lake and surrounding forests. I tried freshly caught freshwater fish seasoned with local spices. The flavor was rich and different from city food. There were also local vegetables and seasonal fruits served alongside, making the meal fresh and healthy.

Besides food, I also saw handwoven textiles and handicrafts made by Burmese girls in the village. Each piece is delicate and clearly reflects Shan culture. Although a small community, their beauty and wisdom are wonderfully expressed through their art.

Impressions and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

Visiting Tinsaou this time made me, mr.hotsia, feel like I opened a door to a new world of Myanmar—not just the images of pagodas or big tourist cities, but real stories of real people, real lifestyles, and genuine nature. I encourage those who love deep travel experiences to visit here once to feel the peace and warmth that cannot be found elsewhere.
