Tinsaung, a small town by Indawgyi Lake, experience the lifestyle of #BurmeseGirls #RedTai #Shan
If you have followed my work, mr.hotsia, for a long time, you probably know that I enjoy traveling deep into lands that many people are still unfamiliar with. Tinsaung is one of the destinations that made me fall in love with Myanmar again. This town is located byIndawgyi Lake(Indawgyi Lake), the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. This place is not only naturally beautiful but also filled with the friendliness of the Red Tai and Shan people living around the lake.
Tinsaung is not a big city like Yangon or Mandalay, but its simplicity and tranquility impressed me. Arriving in Tinsaung for me was an adventure into the authentic Burmese lifestyle that still firmly preserves traditional customs. I saw Burmese girls dressed in traditional Red Tai Shan costumes. They both sell goods in the local market and warmly take care of their families.
Traveling to Tinsaung and its connection with Kachin State
For traveling to Tinsaung, I recommend starting from the town of Myitkyina inKachin Statewhich is where the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers converge to form the mighty Irrawaddy River. The journey from Myitkyina to Tinsaung takes about 2-3 hours by car, passing through rural routes with small villages hidden along the way. I stopped to rest and chat with friendly locals, alternating with views of lush green mountains and endless rice fields.
Tinsaung is located in the Mohnyin administrative district of Kachin State, which is ethnically diverse with Red Tai, Shan, and Kachin peoples. Each group has distinct cultures and languages. I recommend talking to locals to deeply understand their way of life and history.
Indawgyi Lake: The Emerald Freshwater of Southeast Asia
Indawgyi Lake near Tinsaung is not just an ordinary tourist spot but an important wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. I rented a boat from a small guesthouse by the lake to explore nature and rare birds living in the area, especially in January when the Lesser Whistling Ducks and Greylag Geese arrive in large flocks, creating a spectacular sight.
The peaceful atmosphere of the lake and the small surrounding villages made me feel like I had entered another world. Most locals engage in small-scale farming and fishing for their livelihood. The food from Indawgyi Lake is very fresh and clean. I had the chance to taste a local fish called Hilsa, which is as popular here as it is in Bangladesh.
Daily Life and Local Market in Tinsaung
The market in Tinsaung is another spot I like to visit because it reveals the genuine local lifestyle of Burmese girls and the community. I walked through stalls selling fresh vegetables and fruits grown nearby, as well as shops offering fragrant local spices and herbs. Handwoven fabrics and local handicrafts are also abundant, making it a great opportunity for tourists looking for unique souvenirs.
Most food in Tinsaung has a mild flavor using fresh ingredients from the lake and surrounding forests. I recommend trying the Indawgyi fish curry with tamarind and aromatic spices, paired perfectly with hot sticky rice. For those who love authentic local cuisine, this dish is a must-try.
Reflections from the Journey and Why mr.hotsia Loves Tinsaung
Tinsaung is not a well-known tourist city, but for me, it feels like a hidden treasure between mountains and a vast lake. I witnessed the beauty of nature and the sincerity of locals without any pretense.
