Tinsaung, a small town by Indawgyi Lake, experience the lifestyle of Red Tai Burmese women in Kachin State

I, Mr.Hotsia, had the chance to travel deep into a corner of Myanmar that many may not be familiar with. That place is “Tinsaung,” a small village by Indawgyi Lake inKachin Statewhere the lifestyles of the Red Tai and Shan people blend harmoniously. Indawgyi Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, surrounded by over 20 villages where locals still live simply and sustainably in harmony with nature.

Traveling to Tinsaung is not easy. I, Mr.Hotsia, had to depart from Myitkyina city inKachin Statewhich I have written about before. The journey involved driving through rugged terrain, requiring special caution especially during the rainy season when roads become slippery and muddy. But upon seeing the vast and tranquil Indawgyi Lake, all fatigue vanished immediately. The lake is approximately 24 kilometers long and about 13 kilometers wide, serving as a vital water source sustaining the local communities.

Life of the Red Tai and Shan People in Tinsaung

Here, you will experience the authentic local atmosphere of Red Tai Burmese women and Shan people, most of whom engage in agriculture and traditional fishing. I had the chance to chat with villagers at a small morning market by the lake. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. They have preserved their traditional customs firmly. The Burmese women here wear colorful traditional costumes and beautiful silver jewelry, which is very impressive.

The cuisine of Tinsaung residents focuses on fresh ingredients from the lake and fields. My favorite dish was freshly grilled river fish served with sticky rice and fresh vegetables with a spicy kick. Another must-try is the fish curry cooked with local herbs, spicy yet surprisingly mellow. If anyone has ever fallen in love with local food as I have described in my articles,Food in Bagan, Baganyou will understand that the delicacies here are just as good.

Indawgyi Lake, a Paradise for Birdwatchers and Nature Lovers

Indawgyi Lake is not just an ordinary water body but also an important wildlife sanctuary. It is home to many rare birds and animals, especially endangered species like the Greylag Goose and the Lesser Adjutant Stork. I rented a boat from a guesthouse in the village to go birdwatching early in the morning. The cool, peaceful air and the boat trip around the lake’s nature is an experience I believe I will never forget.

Additionally, around the lake, there are small hiking trails for adventure lovers who want to experience the tropical rainforest and local flora up close. I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend preparing mosquito repellent and proper hiking shoes because some paths can be slippery and wet.

Connection with Kachin State and Travel

For those who have followed my stories inKachin Stateyou will know that this area is full of fascinating nature and culture. The journey from Myitkyina to Tinsaung takes about 2-3 hours depending on road and weather conditions. I recommend renting a sturdy car or motorcycle because some parts of the route are still underdeveloped.

I, Mr.Hotsia, have shared travel stories in this area in other articles that provide a good overview of Kachin State and nearby regions, such as visitingIndawgyi Lakeand the lifestyle in surrounding villages that still retain the raw nature and local culture.
