Tinsaung, the land of Burmese girls in the middle of Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State
When talking about Myanmar, many might think of classic tourist cities like Bagan or the origin of the Irrawaddy River inKachin StateBut for me, mr.hotsia, “Tinsaung” is one of the impressive destinations that still preserves the pure way of life of the true Burmese people. Tinsaung is located by Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, which lies within the Mohnyin administrative area of Kachin State.
I arrived at Tinsaung after a drive from the main city of Kachin State. The road ahead wound through mountains and small villages where people still live simply. Upon reaching the shore of Indawgyi Lake, I was captivated by the vast view of the deep blue water surrounded by lush green mountains, with small fishing boats sailing back and forth. The pier here is the center of the local people, mostly Shan, also known as “Red Tai.” They still firmly preserve their unique culture and language.
Lakeside Life and Burmese Culture
Tinsaung is not just a tourist spot but home to many Shan and Kachin villages scattered around the lake. In the morning, I strolled through a small waterside market where locals sold agricultural products and fresh lake seafood, including fresh lake fish, local vegetables, and fragrant sticky rice cooked over charcoal stoves, filling the air with a delightful aroma.
The atmosphere here is peaceful and warm, completely different from the big tourist cities I have visited. The locals still live closely connected to nature and Indawgyi Lake. I had the chance to ride a wooden boat to explore the nature around the lake, spotting water birds and wildlife protected in the Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1999, which is an important habitat for many rare bird species.
Travel and Advice from mr.hotsia
Traveling to Tinsaung is not very easy as it is located in the mountainous area of Kachin State. But for adventurous travelers, renting a motorcycle or hiring a car from Mohnyin city will make the journey more convenient. Along the way, you will see villages of various Burmese ethnic groups, diverse cultures, and pristine nature. I recommend allowing enough travel time and not missing the chance to stop at roadside villages to truly experience local life.
This place is suitable for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility. It is not recommended to visit on a rushed tour because the beauty and charm of Indawgyi Lake and the surrounding communities require time to absorb and leisurely stroll to understand the meaning of peace and warmth in this land.
Impressive Local Food and Culture
The food in Tinsaung mainly focuses on ingredients from the lake and local agriculture. I tried grilled fish with herbs freshly prepared by locals and Shan-style fish curry with a rich flavor unlike anywhere else in Myanmar. The food here is not as spicy as in big cities but has a mild and fresh taste in every bite, somewhat similar to the local food experience in Bagan that I have shared in previous articles.Food and Dining in Bagan, MyanmarBut here you will feel the raw and simple essence of the Shan people more strongly.
Additionally, the locals have distinctive traditions and attire, especially Shan Burmese girls who wear colorful traditional outfits with headscarves and unique accessories. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to talk with several local Burmese girls. They were friendly and cheerful, leaving a very memorable impression on this trip.
Connecting Travel with Routes Around Kachin State
If you are interested in continuing your journey from Tinsaung, I recommend exploring the route tothe origin of the Irrawaddy River at Mitzonor enjoying nature and rare birds atIndawgyi Lakefully. I, mr.hotsia, have recommended that renting a motorcycle in Kachin State helps you truly experience the local charm. Don’t forget to prepare a helmet and dust protection gear because the roads in the area are still dirt roads with a lot of dust.
For those who love peaceful atmospheres and want to escape the hustle and bustle, Tinsaung and Indawgyi Lake offer a new perspective of Myanmar, with few tourists but full of natural charm and impressive traditional culture.
