Tinsaung, the land of Burmese girls by Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State

When talking about Myanmar, many may think of famous cities like Yangon, Bagan, or Mandalay. But for mr.hotsia, traveling to experience the lifestyle of Burmese girls in Kachin State at Tinsaung becomes an equally memorable experience. Tinsaung is a village by Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, located in Mohnyin District, Kachin State, Myanmar.

Indawgyi Lake stretches 24 kilometers from north to south and is about 13 kilometers wide. More than 20 villages surround the lake. Among them are the Shan people, also known as the "Red Tai," the main ethnic group whose lifestyle mr.hotsia had the chance to experience directly. The area is about 166 meters above sea level. The surrounding atmosphere remains very pure and natural, which led to Indawgyi Lake being declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999, covering over 780 square kilometers.

mr.hotsia began the journey from Myitkyina, a city not far from Kachin State along the Irrawaddy River. This city serves as a connection point before entering the Indawgyi Lake area. For those interested in the origin of the Irrawaddy River, I recommend reading the story inKachin Statewhich details the source of Myanmar's main river, helping to enrich the understanding of this trip very well.

To get to Tinsaung from Myitkyina, mr.hotsia chose to rent a motorcycle and ride through small villages that still maintain traditional agricultural lifestyles. The route is filled with scenes of people shopping at roadside fresh markets, including women in traditional tribal costumes clearly showing the beauty typical of the Red Tai or Shan Burmese girls.

In Tinsaung, villagers still live simply following traditional ways. I had the opportunity to talk with Shan Burmese girls here. They shared about their traditions, culture, and agricultural methods by the lake that help the community live in harmony with nature. Local products such as handwoven fabrics, local food, and other handicrafts are charms that travelers like mr.hotsia never miss supporting.

The food around Indawgyi Lake is mostly traditional Burmese cuisine blended with ingredients from the lake, such as fresh river fish seasoned with Shan spices. The flavors are quite bold and intense but still balanced like home cooking. mr.hotsia recommends trying the famous “Indawgyi Fish Curry” and the local sticky rice steamed fresh every morning.

Besides Tinsaung, if you want to explore the full beauty of Indawgyi Lake, I recommend renting a boat from guesthouses in nearby villages and cruising around the lake to enjoy nature. You can see rare birds such as Greylag geese, lesser whistling ducks, and purple swamphens, which are endangered species during January. You will experience the peace and grandeur of nature rarely found nowadays.

For those interested in the tribes of Kachin State and wanting to deeply understand the lifestyle of Burmese people, mr.hotsia recommends following more stories atIndawgyiwhich will add dimension and understanding to this journey.

Tinsaung and Indawgyi Lake are not just ordinary tourist spots but lands full of life stories of people who firmly preserve their cultural identity. For mr.hotsia, visiting here is opening the heart to learn and experience the beauty of Myanmar from another pure and enchanting perspective.
