In-depth look at Myanmar House Toilet: The simple rural lifestyle in Myanmar you may have never known

I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Myanmar many times, but the most recent opportunity to experience closely was seeing and trying the local-style home toilet, often calledMyanmar house toiletThis is not a toilet like those we are familiar with in big cities or luxury hotels, but an experience that truly reflects the traditional lifestyle of the Myanmar people.

From traveling in many areas of Myanmar, especially rural districts and small villages I passed through, whether near natural tourist spots like Indawgyi Lake inKachin Stateor riverside villages along the Irrawaddy River, I noticed that the simple home toilets here have unique characteristics that are clearly different from elsewhere.

Characteristics and Usage of Myanmar House Toilet

Rural Myanmar home toilets are often pit latrines, simply called “pit toilets,” where a hole is dug into the ground. Sometimes they are built separate from the house for convenience and better hygiene. Though simple and rustic, they are designed to suit the local environment and culture.

When I, mr.hotsia, tried it for the first time, the feeling was new and challenging because it’s unlike city toilets we are used to. There is no flush or seat; just a hole about one meter deep with a wooden or cement floor with a hole to sit or stand on. The toilet is usually open-air, without a fully closing door, but surrounded by wooden or corrugated metal walls for some privacy.

In some remote areas, facilities like water may not be fully available, so handwashing or cleaning after using the toilet relies on scooping water from nearby ponds or water containers. This made me adapt and be more careful about hygiene.

Beliefs and Culture Regarding Toilets in Myanmar

Toilets in Myanmar hold cultural and belief significance among locals. I, mr.hotsia, heard from locals that toilets must be located away from the house and oriented properly to prevent bad things or negative energy from entering the home, a practice followed for generations.

Additionally, before and after using the toilet, Myanmar people carefully wash their hands with clean water, which shows their emphasis on hygiene even in environments that may not be modern or as convenient as we are used to.

Experience and Advice from mr.hotsia for Tourists

If you want to truly experience the genuine lifestyle of Myanmar people, trying the Myanmar House Toilet is an experience not to miss. But be prepared mentally and physically, as it may not be as comfortable as what you’re used to.

What I recommend is to bring a small face mask or nose cover because sometimes the smell may be unpleasant, and don’t forget to carry wet wipes or personal hand sanitizer for cleanliness and safety.

If you travel to areas likeKachin Stateor near Indawgyi Lake, where nature remains pure and local culture is strong, seeing and experiencing the Myanmar house toilet will give you an incredible understanding of Myanmar life and lifestyle.

Connection with Tourism in Myanmar

For those who love adventure and want to understand the real lifestyle of Myanmar people, visiting nature spots like Indawgyi Lake or the Irrawaddy River and small villages will help you see a clearer picture of rural life. I have written about this in articlesIndawgyiandKachin Statewhere I recommend renting a motorcycle to explore and experience the lifestyle up close.

Also, if you have a chance to visit Bagan, don’t forget to try local food as I described in my articleFood in Bagan, MyanmarAnd if you enjoy leisurely city walks, you can try riding a horse carriage as I shared inHorse Carriage Ride in Baganto truly feel the city’s atmosphere.

Summary

Myanmar House Toilet may seem like a small thing, but for me, mr.hotsia, it is one of the experiences that reveals the deep differences and sincerity of Myanmar people’s lifestyle beyond just visiting beautiful places. Experiencing this simple rural way of life helped me understand and respect local culture more, and it is a perspective I want to share with travelers who are open to new experiences.
