Selling on Myanmar Trains: Life and Colors on the Railway Tracks

Anyone who has traveled by train in Myanmar will be struck by the lively scene of various vendors walking through the train selling their goods. This is one of the experiences mr.hotsia wants to share from the field because it’s not just a journey but a glimpse into the real life and culture of the people in Myanmar.

I had the chance to ride a train line not far from Kachin State (read more atKachin State) where the nature is very beautiful. The train is one of the important routes connecting many rural communities. As the train moved out of the station, everyone in the carriage began to see vendors walking through selling goods in an orderly fashion, ranging from snacks, fresh fruit, drinking water to essential items—all sold on the moving train.

The atmosphere on Myanmar trains is like a moving market because vendors walk up and down between carriages. The sounds of bargaining and greetings are frequent, making you feel like you are in a small community where everyone knows each other, even a stranger like me.

The food sold on the train is very diverse, including traditional Burmese snacks like mochi or sticky rice desserts. There are also stuffed breads and seasonal fruits such as ripe mangoes, bananas, and sweet pomelos. I tried some of these snacks during the train ride; the flavors were simple but full of warmth, very different from tourist area restaurants.

Besides food, the items sold on the train are equally interesting, such as handwoven scarves, small jewelry, and souvenirs from local communities. These reflect the culture and wisdom passed down in each area.

What mr.hotsia enjoyed most was talking with these vendors. Some come from small villages along the Irrawaddy River. For those interested in nature and life close to this river, I recommend reading the story ofIrrawaddy Riverside Market in Patheinwhich I have documented. Traveling by train amazingly connects these people together.

Myanmar Trains: More Than Transportation, It’s a Life Experience

As the Myanmar train slowly passes through diverse landscapes, from lush green fields to small villages at the forest edge, I watched the scenery and noticed that every time the train stopped at small stations, more people got on or off along with new vendors boarding to sell goods. I think this is one way local communities maintain their traditional way of life amid the changing world.

The train is not just a means of travel but a real floating market. In Myanmar, I experienced the sincerity of sellers, the friendliness of passengers, and the variety of goods—all filled with stories and local wisdom.

Tips and Things to Know for Those Wanting to Try Myanmar Trains

For travelers wanting to experience the atmosphere of Myanmar trains like mr.hotsia, I recommend preparing well, including bringing a face mask because some parts of the train can be dusty, and carrying cash to buy food and souvenirs from the vendors on the train.

Trains in Myanmar may not be as comfortable as in other countries, but this simplicity makes the journey more fun and charming. Try to sit near the window to enjoy the view and don’t hesitate to talk to the people around you. I guarantee you will return home with memorable stories and friendships.
